Description

This module takes a population health approach to expanding students skills to promote physical activity in a variety of population groups across a range of defined settings.

Learners will be supported to critically appraise physical activity promotion and maintenance practice in terms of effectiveness of initiatives.

The learner will consider limitations and pragmatic concerns within different settings based approaches to promoting physical activity - recognising the significance of 'setting' when developing physical activity interventions.

Students will develop a comprehensive and evidence-based knowledge of the settings-based approach to promoting physical activity and preventing physical inactivity.

Key settings will include (but are not limited to): educational, community, workplace, health services, family/home and digital settings

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Identify and demonstrate a detailed knowledge of the concepts, models and principles behind a settings based approach to physical activity promotion.

2.

Source, interpret and critically appraise health related literature/evidence that supports the design and evaluation of effective physical activity promotion in specific settings considering demographic sensitivity.

3.

Develop and present a proposal for a physical activity funding application for a specific specialist setting.

4.

Build a setting specific resource pack/ materials for the promotion of physical activity, justifying format, layout and content by considering the context of that setting.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Teaching will incorporate large- group lectures and small-group practicals that take a student centred approach. Workshops will take an enquiry based learning approach where students will actively engage with each other through group and individual tasks through blended learning opportunities. Moodle will be used as a repository of educational resources and as a means of assessment (e.g. further reading suggestions, uploading assignments etc.).

Module Assessment Strategies

This module is 100% continuous assessment with the main focus being on their ability to develop a funding proposal for a physical activity intervention. Continuous assessment tasks will focus on the application of theory to a real-world scenario involving a broad spectrum of student skills including research, communication, planning and creativity skills catering for a broad range of learning styles, learning rates and strengths.

Critical appraisal of current research or evidence for physical activity in a specific setting will be assessed through a written case-study and development of a resource pack to support the intervention proposed. Students will also be assessed for a presentation of a physical activity funding proposal during workshop/practical time aligning with evidence- based practice.

Repeat Assessments

A student may repeat all or part of the continuous assessment, where they have met the 75% minimum attendance at workshops. This will depend on the individual's deficits and circumstances.

If a student fails to meet the 75% minimum attendance and/or has a poor attendance record at lectures together with a poor assessment profile irrespective of the reason(s) for absence, they will be recommended to repeat-attend the module.

Indicative Syllabus

  • Overview of  the wide range of settings that can be utilised to promote Physical Activity.
  • Conceptual framework applicable to using a settings based approach.
  • Overview key concepts in applying a settings-based approach to the promotion of physical activity uptake and adherence with consideration of challenges and opportunities that various settings provide for the promotion of physical activity for health.
  • Explore diverse physical activity policies from the perspective of policy content and remit, how the policy is delivered and supported, by examining national and international physical activity initiatives.
  • Explore selected methods, tools and approaches to effectively implement large-scale physical activity initiatives demonstrating demographic sensitivity, through focusing on a wide selection of topical settings. For example (but not limited to); education, community, workplace, health services, home, digital settings.

Health Promotion Settings combines the theoretical discourse of the settings approach, covering a wide range of fundamental principles, concepts and policy issues, with real life examples of settings, including workplaces, schools, neighbourhood, cities and prisons. Frameworks and processes that are actively shaping health promotion in settings in the 21st Century are documented and the ideas and research covered will provide a vital set of indicators for those who promote health in settings. Combining theory with practical examples and case studies, the authors show how a settings approach can work in practice, drawing on a range of local, national and international initiatives and coordinated projects. Health Promotion Settings provides a rich source of ideas and case examples which highlight the challenges for promoting health in a range of contexts. Special attention is given to the workplace as both a priority area for health promotion and a key determinant of health. Written by a highly experienced team of health promotion and public health professionals, academics and researchers, this book is essential reading for both students and practitioners working towards the improvement of health using a settings approach. Online Resources are provided.

Physical activity and its relationship to health is one of the great issues of our age. The causes of, and solutions to, physical inactivity are complex and multi-dimensional, and therefore the subject needs to be studied and understood from a variety of perspectives. This is the first textbook to provide a truly multi-disciplinary introduction to physical activity studies. Offering a complete foundation to the subject, it covers the basics of every core discipline from biochemistry, public health and biomechanics to physiology, sport psychology and sociology. It introduces a full range of topics across the physical activity curriculum, including behaviour change, motor skill development, nutrition, exercise prescription, public health policy, and physical education, providing a well-balanced and international perspective on each important issue. There is also a strong emphasis throughout the book on the practical, applied dimensions of physical activity, including innovative approaches to promotion and intervention tailored to every age range and environment. Physical Activity: A Multi-disciplinary Introduction is an indispensable companion to any course or degree programme with an emphasis on physical activity and health. A variety of exclusive eResources to aid teaching and learning are also available via the Routledge website.

Physical activity is vital for good health. It has an established strong evidence base for its positive effects on functional capacity, reducing the risk of many chronic diseases, and promoting physical, mental and social well-being. Furthermore, these benefits are evident across a diversity of ages, groups and populations. The need for these benefits in current societies means that exercise practitioners, professional bodies, institutions, health authorities and governments require high quality evidence to establish appropriate exercise guidelines, implementation strategies and effective exercise prescription at individual, group and population levels. Research Methods in Physical Activity and Health is the first book to comprehensively present the issues associated with physical activity and health research and outline methods available along with considerations of the issues associated with these methods and working with particular groups. The book outlines the historical and scientific context of physical activity and health research before working through the full research process, from generating literature reviews and devising a research proposal, through selecting a research methodology and quantifying physical activity and outcome measures, to disseminating findings. Including a full section on conducting research studies with special populations, the book includes chapters on: Observational and cross-sectional studies; Interviews, questionnaires and focus groups; Qualitative and quantitative research methods; Epidemiological research methods; Physical activity interventions and sedentary behaviour; and Working with children, older people, indigenous groups, LGBTI groups, and those with physical and mental health issues. Research Methods in Physical Activity and Health is the only book to approach the full range of physical activity research methods from a health perspective. It is essential reading for any undergraduate student conducting a research project or taking applied research modules in physical activity and health, graduate students of epidemiology, public health, exercise psychology or exercise physiology with a physical activity and health focus, or practicing researchers in the area.
