Description

Learners will further enhance their knowledge and practical skills to design, implement and evaluate exercise / physical activity programmes through collecting and analysing client information to ensure the safety and effectiveness of personal exercise programmes.

The student will develop theoretical knowledge in advanced exercise physiology and sports specific training methods, and practical skills to design a 12 week tailored exercise programme for a client and deliver 6 weeks of this programme during the semester.  Exercise programme monitoring and evaluation skills will be applied to make appropriate adaptations and progressions to programmes being rolled out during ‘personal training practice’.

Leadership qualities, communication skills and motivation strategies required to encourage and empower individuals to adopt and self-sustain regular exercise / physical activity programmes underpin practical exercise programming.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Critically evaluate the acute and chronic physiological implications of various training and recovery strategies.

2.

Apply relevant cognitive-behavioural and psychological theory to conduct an exercise consultation with clients and conduct, record and interpret appropriate health & fitness evaluations as part of the process of need analysis, goal-setting and pre-programme planning.

3.

Plan safe, evidence-based exercise programmes for a variety of clients demonstrating ability to rationalise specific programming decisions.

4.

Deliver personal training to safely and effectively lead exercise sessions targeting various physiological aims, demonstrating the knowledge and ability to operate various methods of exercise monitoring and skills for client correction and motivation.

5.

Adapt and progress programmes appropriately based on objective indices of programme evaluation and client feedback.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

This module will be delivered full-time and include lectures, practical workshops and directed learning whereby students will personally train a client outside of class time compiling a portfolio of evidence for assessment purposes.  Practical workshops and various directed learning tasks will prepare students for independently personally training clients, developing their confidence and autonomy both in an exercise environment and to undertake independent research on relevant topics, e.g. training methods.  These approaches are expected to meet the students various learning needs.

A VLE may be used to support learning; a repository for educational and resources and assessment and a portal for directed learning task instructions.

Module Assessment Strategies

This module is 100% Continuous Assessment.

A. Underpinning theoretical knowledge will be assessed at regular intervals across the semester using computer-based MCQ/short-answer quizzes: 2-3 quizzes worth 10-15% each.

B. Technical programming and instructional skills for selected advanced fitness training methods will be assessed mid-late semester via a performance evaluation on a peer supported by a session plan. (20%)

C. Practical skills relevant to the design and delivery of personal training will be assessed at appropriate stages across the semester keeping pace with the student as they deliver 6 weeks of a pre-planned 12-week programme one-on-one with a real client volunteer employing various forms of assessment which may include but is not limited to:

 - Initial Client Consultation, e.g. transcript / video-recording (10%) - early weeks

 - Pre-exercise health & lifestyle screening / information, e.g. completed questionnaires (5%) - early weeks

 - Pre-exercise health & fitness evaluation e.g. summary of test results (5%) - End Portfolio

 - Outline programme plan for 12 weeks showing periodised approach and proposed progression/variations and means of monitoring sessions (10%) - early weeks

 - Programme Cards for 6 of the 12 weeks from 2 sessions per week of the programme (10%) - End Portfolio

 - Programme process & outcome evaluation, e.g. instructor notes/logs; client feedback/satisfaction scales/logs; objective re-test data (10% - end Portfolio

The student must pass individual elements of the Module (A, B & C above) to acheive a 'Pass Overall' in the subject assuring technical competence.

Repeat Assessments

Repeat continuous assessment will be offered where a student has met the minimum attendance requirements.
