Description

This module examines the basic roles and responsibilities of the exercise and physical activity specialist in prescription of exercise for clinical populations. It is designed to equip students to plan, deliver and monitor safe and effective exercise programmes. 

Students will also develop the analytical skills required to assess individual needs, set goals and prepare and evaluate long-term exercise plans with reference to diverse range of clients.

The module will emphasise evidence-based practice and the dose-response relationship between exercise and health outcomes.  Mechanisms under-pinning the protective effect of exercise against specific conditions will be highlighted.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Identify and discuss the prevalence, aetiology, basic pathology, typical pharmacology and risk factors associated with selected chronic conditions. 

2.

Propose the role of exercise as a solution for the prevention and treatment of chronic conditions, using evidence based research; with consideration of possible pharmacological interactions with physiological exercise responses. 

3.

Conduct a client-centred exercise consultation using motivational interviewing techniques.

4.

Plan safe and effective exercise programmes for the prevention and treatment of chronic conditions using the FITTA model.

5.

Monitor, progress and critically evaluate programmes for a diverse range of clients.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

The module will adopt multiple strategies including a problem based, practical student centred approach. This approach will provide opportunity for interviewing, planning, evaluating and reflecting in a real life learning environment. Such experiences will provide an interactive learning environment for enriching the student's understanding and experience. This approach will informally develop students soft skills in terms of interacting with people. Principles and theories will be presented and explained in lectures and explored further in workshops. Students will be encouraged to actively participate in workshops through the use of case studies of practical working examples and through discussion. Students will work independently in presenting a case study, and an evidence based exercise plan.  

Module Assessment Strategies

This module is 100% Continuous Assessment. 

 

Repeat Assessments

A student may repeat all or part of the continuous assessment, where they have met the 75% minimum attendance at workshops.

If a student fails to meet the 75% minimum attendance, they will be recommended to repeat-attend the practicals.

  • Clinical conditions
    • Prevalence, Aetiology, Pathophysiology, Public Health Considerations
    • Conditions include (but not limited to): Musculoskeletal & Rheumatological, Respiratory, Cancer conditions, Mental Health and Multi-morbidity
  • Principles of exercise for health and fitness within a clinical population
    • The art/science of exercise prescription for a potentially referred client
    • Recognising appropriate exercise referrals, screening and contra-indications
    • Pharmacological considerations. 
  • Exercise Consultations
    • Client-centred, using motivational interviewing techniques
    • Conducting a needs analysis and goal-setting with clients
    • Identifying motivations and barriers to compliance
    • Optimising exercise adherence, behavioural change and managing expectations.
  • Planning safe and effective exercise programmes for the prevention and treatment of chronic conditions using the FITTA model
    • Developing programmes to accommodate cardiovascular, respiratory, metabolic and neuromuscular impairment
    • Follow evidence based best practice or if none available, how best to communicate with health professional or medical doctor to agree appropriate variables. 
    • Safety and supervision considerations
    • The role and limitations of the clinical exercise instructor
  • Explore how to monitor, progress and critically evaluate programmes with reference to a wide variety of client conditions
    • Monitoring and progressing or modifying exercise
    • Critical evaluation of programme performance
    • Maintaining communication with the health or medical professional who may have referred
