Description
This module introduces students global health in the current, social, political and environmental context, and aims to develop improved skills in critical thinking on the global level determinants of health and global governance for health.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;
1.
Report on the current Global Burden of Disease and critically appraise the literature & current policy on select issues in global health
2.
Demonstrate awareness of the complex determinants of health in the current global context: social, political, & environmental.
3.
Review global level action (governance) for health and identify the implications for Irish stakeholders and communities.
4.
Apply understanding of concepts of health equity, social justice and health as a human right to the analysis of select issues in global public health.
5.
Promote the concept of global citizenship to advocate for and enable action on sustainable health and wellbeing among your peers.
Teaching and Learning Strategies
This module will be delivered using a blended learning model introducing a flipped classroom after introductory weeks.
Individual engagement: (face to face and online)
Lectures 1 hr pw: Introductory face to face lectures transitioned to online delivery for final 6 weeks. Individual narratives and storytelling used extensively to engage students with material. Assigned reading materials and online resources provide opportunities for independent and flexible engagement with learning. Scaffolding is provided using prompts and rubrics to develop skills in critical reflection on reading . Peer to peer learning will be used to help students to self assess, develop concepts of best practice and identify aspirational standards.
Group Learning Workshops 2hr pw (face to face):
Collective reading, participatory diaglogue, inquiry, role play and games to reinforce core concepts, experience different perspectives and use of models to map, understand and communicate complex relationships and pathways.

- Team presentation : Engagement and broader understanding of global perspectives
- Individual critical reflection and or short questions on required reading with peer and self assessment facilitated by rubrics: Build individual competence in reading, critical reflection and communication/advocacy.
- Individual project assignment on an issue of students choice - with global determinants: In-depth treatment of specific issue of students choosing (self motivation) that could be used to advocate for action - eg writing a policy brief, planning a health promotion campaign or building a specific partnership for action.
