Description

Public health is identified as both the ‘science and art of preventing disease, promoting and protecting and improving well-being through the organised efforts of society'. This module aims to give students the skills necessary for effective public health practice. These include assessing health problems, developing healthy public policies and effective health care systems. It involves working collaboratively across a variety of disciplines and researching and implementing evidence based practice to promote the health of the population.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Identify the core functions of public health and analyse current public health practice

2.

Asses current public health problems and identify means of prioritising actions.

3.

Analyse health policies and their development in Ireland and debate current health policy issues in relation to the provision of healthcare.

4.

Develop an advocacy plan for developing or changing policy in Ireland showing an understanding of various mechanism for policy change. 

5.

Debate current policy and ethical issues in public health.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Lectures will be used to introduce students to key concepts and to give relevant and current  examples and bring meaning to the various concepts and issues in public health. Short multiple choice questions will be given during lectures to review and revise some of the previous lecture materials.

Practicals will involve active participation of students in selecting an advocacy issue and the design of an advocacy/ policy change plan. Students will be encourage to source peer relevant data to support their case.

Students will be presented with a number of peer reviewed papers relevant to the syllabus to discuss and apply relevant public health concepts. Furthermore students will be encouraged to develop debates on topical issues in public health.

Students will be given feedback from lecturer and also from peers where relevant. Presentations will be video recorded and students will be encouraged to review their own performance and set goals for further development and learning.

Module Assessment Strategies

Terminal Exam and Continuous Assessment 

Students will be assessed weekly on their contribution to their advocacy project. Evidence will be requested of their contribution to their groups’ activities and also of the groups meeting minutes and agendas.

Students will be assessed on presentation of a group advocacy project and also their ability to debate a prepared topic. Student’s oral presentations will be video recorded to ensure reliability of assessment and also to give students an opportunity to appraise their own performance

A terminal exam will assess the student’s knowledge and formative assessments will be given on a regular basis to aid revision and give students feedback on their learning.
