Description

This module will enable the learner to apply various concepts and theories in exercise physiology and exercise prescription to practical settings involving specific populations. This application will equip learners with skills and competencies to plan, devise and lead physical activity programmes with various population groups.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Examine the physiology and subsequent guidelines for a variety of specific and age defined populations.

2.

Integrate theory into professional practice by designing physical activity programmes, considering the client's competencies and requirements and identifying special considerations pertaining to the specific population group.

3.

Be self-aware, open, appreciative and sensitive to others in a group environment working within allocated responsibility.

4.

Work as part of a team to plan, prepare, deliver and evaluate physical activity sessions for group instruction to specific populations.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

This module will be delivered full time. This will include lectures, practicals and external groups coming onsite to engage in physical activity sessions. It will be augmented by independent learning and directed learning. This approach is expected to address student learning needs. Moodle will be used as a repository of educational resources and as a means of assessment (e.g. quizzes and uploading assignments).

The assessment strategy for this modules focusses on practical application of theory in real world scenarios. written reports assess ability to plan appropriate PA sessions, practical evaluation assess ability to work, communicate and engage in team environments with certain populations.

Module Assessment Strategies

This module is 65% Continuous Assessment and 35% Final Exam.

The module will be assessed using a combination of end of semester final exam (35%), continuous assessment and course work (65%). The continuous assessment and course work will involve a plan and a critical evaluation of a group based activity session and a summative MCQ.

The student must reach an assigned gate (30 marks) in the final exam and achieve 40% overall to pass the subject.

Repeat Assessments

Repeat Continuous Assessment and/or Final Exam.

The fourth edition of ACSM's Exercise Management for Persons with Chronic Diseases and Disabilities reveals common ground between medical and exercise professionals, creating a more collaborative approach to patient care. Developed by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) with contributions from a specialised team of experts, it presents a framework for optimising patients' and clients' functionality by keeping them physically active. This updated fourth edition outlines why exercise is significant in the treatment and prevention of disease, advises medical and exercise professionals in considering proper exercise prescription protocols and provides evidence- informed guidance on devising individualised exercise programmes., Its emphasis on assisting people with multiple conditions, which is ever present in health care today, moves beyond primary and secondary prevention to focus on how patients and clients can be kept physically active and functionally fit.

Physiology of Sport and Exercise, Sixth Edition, frames research findings in physiology in a reader-friendly format, making this textbook a favorite of instructors and students alike. This resource offers a simple way for students to develop an understanding of the bodys abilities to perform various types and intensities of exercise and sport, to adapt to stressful situations, and to improve its physiological capacities.

The Second Edition is designed for final year students and graduates studying kinesiology, exercise science, physical education, public health, health promotion, preventive medicine and human biology. It looks at the health benefits associated with a physically active lifestyle and a moderate level of fitness versus the potential deleterious consequences of physical inactivity. The book focuses on the prevention of diseases and enhancement of quality of life and well-being., It does not deal with the role of physical activity in the treatment of diseases and rehabilitation and is not intended to be an encyclopedic review of the field. Instead, each chapter provides an overview of the key concepts and the most important findings emerging from a collection of studies, discusses the limitations of the current knowledge base and identifies research needs. It highlights the link between physical activity and health.

Uses the model of constraints (or dynamical systems) approach in discussing reasons for changes in movement throughout the life span. This title encourages students to observe and examine how the interactions of the individual, environment, and task affect changes in a person's movements.

The statistics are disturbing: steadily rising numbers of sedentary overweight children and obese teens, and a generation looking at a shorter life expectancy than their parents. But while it may be obvious that physical fitness benefits both the mind and body, a growing research base is supplying evidence of why this is so, and how these benefits may be reproduced in greater numbers.

Physical Activity Across the Lifespan makes a clear, scientific case for exercise, sports, and an active lifestyle in preventing illness and establishing lifetime health habits at both the individual and the population levels. The book focuses on key aspects of physical/mental well-beingweight, mood, and self-regulationand the role of physical activity in public health and school-based interventions targeting these areas. Contributors review definitional and measurement issues salient to understanding what physical activity is, to analyzing benefits of participation, and to implementing effective interventions. Also addressed are limitations of current research, steps needed to continue building the field, and emerging therapeutic possibilities for activity, such as the role of rough and tumble play in preventing ADHD.

Included in the coverage:

Physical activity, cognition, and school performance.

The influence of social and built environments on physical activity in middle-aged and older adults.

Preventing and treating obesity through physical activity.

Physical activity in preventing drug use and treating chemical dependence.

Antidepressant properties of physical activity.

Schools as a foundation for physical activity and an active lifestyle.

Physical activity as an adjunct or booster to existing interventions.

Physical Activity Across the Lifespan is an innovative text for researchers and practitioners in various disciplines including health promotion/disease prevention, child and school psychology, education, health psychology, and public health, as well as program developers and policymakers in these areas.
