Description

This module aims to introduce the mechanisms associated with the development, progression, manifestation and complications of human disease. The general topics covered include but are not limited to: the nature and causes of cell injury and death; adaptive cellular changes; inflammation, healing and repair, gastrointestinal diseases, genetic diseases, cardiovascular disease and common cancers.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Classify each respective type of disease which affect the major biological systems

2.

Outline the aetiology, pathogenesis, macroscopic and microscopic pathologic feature of the major diseases of each system

3.

Relate the clinical signs and symptoms with the underlying pathologic process

4.

Outline and discuss the major risk factors, complications and prognosis of these major diseases

Teaching and Learning Strategies

This module provides various modes of engagement, representation and expression for the student via lectures, videos, tutorials, and clinical case studies. Tutorial sessions will be used to both review and reinforce learning, and provide guidance for assessment. Clinical scenario problem-solving exercises will be given to promote mechanisms of disease with clinical practice and provide an opportunity to improve confidence in diagnostic reasoning. Any terminologies will be clarified for the student via an online dictionary of terms. Feedback will be given in a timely manner thus enhancing the capacity for self-monitoring by the student.

Module Assessment Strategies

1 X Moodle Quiz, weekly clinical  scenario problem-solving exercises which will be completed and submitted at the end of each workshop within the module.

Repeat Assessments

.

Indicative Syllabus

Module content will address the basis of fundamental elements to body systems. This will be provided in the context of human disease and will broadly cover various areas including:

-Genetic Diseases
- Cardiovascular system and disease
- Neuroscience and neurological disease
- Inflammation and disease
