Description

To introduce the concepts of clinical biochemistry and its application in the medical sciences. This module will provide advanced understanding the principles and application of the biochemical investigations used in screening, diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of disease with an emphasis on the biochemical investigate of function and dysfunction of organs and systems.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Explain in detail principles and application of the biochemical investigations used in screening, diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of disease.

2.

Discuss the physiological and pathological processes which affect biochemical investigations.

3.

Evaluate the use of clinical biochemistry data in the diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of disease

4.

Demonstrate skills in the interpretation of clinical biochemistry findings, taking into account the patient history and presentation and being able to suggest appropriate investigations and further follow up.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

The module is taught by online lectures as well as compulsory participation in online clinical case study tutorials. Case studies will be chosen to develop a more in-depth understanding of the concepts and pathological conditions discussed in the lectures. Multiple means of engagement with key concepts will be delivered via lecture material, videos, case studies and supplementary material. There will be a resource area for students who need to revise some background concepts to aid their understanding in line with UDL practices on multiple means of representation to enhance comprehension.

Module Assessment Strategies

1X Exam, 1 X MCQ, weekly online clinical case-studies to aid comprehension which will be completed and submitted at the end of each workshop session within the module.

Repeat Assessments

If a student does not pass the module they will be required to repeat the CA and/or the exam.

Indicative Syllabus

A range of different areas will be covered such as:

  • The structure and function of kidney and liver and associated diseases of these organs.
  • Water, sodium and potassium and the effects of imbalances.
  • Function of thyroid hormones and related disorders.
  • Adrenal gland and associated disorders.
  • Hydrogen ion homeostasis and blood gases
  • Dysfunction of the hypothalamus and pituitary glands.
  • Gastrointestinal tract and disorders of intestinal function.
  • Calcium, phosphate, magnesium and associated disorders.
  • Plasma proteins, lipids, cardiovascular disease

For four decades, this extraordinary textbook played a pivotal role in the way biochemistry is taught, offering exceptionally clear writing, and innovative graphics, coverage of the latest research techniques and advances, and a signature emphasis on physiological and medical relevance. Those defining features are at the heart of this new edition. Paired for the first time with SaplingPlus the most innovative digital solution for Biochemistry students. Offering the best combination of resources to help students visualise material and develop successful problem-solving skills in an effort to help students master complex concepts in isolation, and draw on that mastery to make connections across concepts.

Biomedical scientists are the foundation of modern healthcare, from cancer screening to diagnosing HIV, from blood transfusion for surgery to food poisoning and infection control. Without biomedical scientists, the diagnosis of disease, the evaluation of the effectiveness of treatment, andresearch into the causes and cures of disease would not be possible. The Fundamentals of Biomedical Science series has been written to reflect the challenges of practicing biomedical science today. It draws together essential basic science with insights into laboratory practice to show how an understanding of the biology of disease is coupled to the analyticalapproaches that lead to diagnosis. Assuming only a minimum of prior knowledge, the series reviews the full range of disciplines to which a Biomedical Scientist may be exposed - from microbiology to cytopathology to transfusion science.Clinical Biochemistry provides a clear and comprehensive introduction to the biochemical basis of disease processes, and how these diseases can be investigated in the biomedical laboratory. New clinical case studies have been added to the second edition, to further emphasize the link between theoryand practice and help engage students with the subject.

This book presents a clear and precise discussion of the biochemistry of eukaryotic cells, particularly those of mammalian tissues, relates biochemical events at a cellular level to the subsequent physiological processes in the whole animal, and cites examples of abnormal biochemical processes in human disease. The organization and content are tied together to provide students with the complete picture of biochemistry and how it relates to human diseases.
