HLTH06050 2020 Cell Biology
The module will provide students with a knowledge of the structure and biological function of cellular components of typical eukaryotes and prokaryotes. The four major biological macromolecules of the cell will also be examined as each is an important component of the cell and performs a wide array of functions. The structure and function of cell membranes along with features of endocytosis and phagocytosis are explained.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;
Identify the structures and functions of the eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells and cell organelles.
Describe the function of biological macromolecules.
Explain endocytosis and phagocytosis.
Describe the cell cycle and core aspects in cell division.
Teaching and Learning Strategies
This module will seek to enhance active participation of the student by providing multiple modes of engagement and representation for the student via online lectures, videos, tutorials, moodle quizzes and worksheets. Online worksheets will be completed weekly to aid in the comprehension of the lecture material. These work sheets will be submitted online at the end of each tutorial. Feedback will be given in a timely manner thus enhancing the capacity for self-monitoring by the student.
Module Assessment Strategies
1 X MCQ, 1 X LAQ, weekly online worksheet exercises which must be completed and uploaded at the end of each session.
Repeat Assessments
If a student does not pass the module they will be required to repeat the CA and/or the exam.
Indicative Syllabus
This module will cover a range of core topics in biology including:
- Cell structure and function.
- The structure of a typical eukaryotic cell.
- The structures and functions of the organelles of a eukaryotic cell.
- The structure of a typical prokaryotic cell, bacterial growth.
- Cell cycle & Cell Division: The cell cycle and its control within cells.
