Description

This module will further explore the determinants of health with greater emphasis on the socio-ecological and environmental determinants of health and the interactions between the various determinants.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Justify why one would take a determinants of health approach to promoting both individual and population health.

2.

Explain the mechanisms through which the major socio-ecological and environmental determinants of health impact on the health of the individual and population.

3.

Identify how health inequalities impact the health of populations - locally, nationally and globally.

4.

Apply the determinants approach to various public health issues

Teaching and Learning Strategies

During the delivery of this module students self learning will be encouraged through use of directed worksheets to relevant up-to-date documents supported through lecture material and online notes.  Workshops will be used to engage in discussion, debate and give formative feedback as they prepare for assessments

Module Assessment Strategies

Assessment during this module will comprise of an individual report based on a case - study and group presentation on particular topics related to the determinants of population health and a final exam to assess theory and application.

Determinants of health - individual approach v a population health approach

Focus on Health Inequalities -upstream, midstream and downstream factors

Focus on core socio-ecological and environmental determinants of health issues - e.g. Housing, Poverty, Education, Employment/Unemployment, Social & Cultural Diversity, Transport, Built Environment and interactions between determinants

Application of the determinants of health in various populations and public health issues and analyse strategies used to promote health
