Description

The aim of this module is to enable students to develop a comprehensive appreciation of aspects of financial management including the implications of different capital structures for organisations and the importance of establishing policies for the efficient management of the individual elements of working capital.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Identify a company's capital structure and understand the implications of possible debt-equity mixes. 

2.

Calculate the weighted average cost of capital for a business and appreciate the conditions where it is appropriate to use this.

3.

Understand the importance of dividends and discuss the factors to be considered by organisations in establishing a dividend policy

4.

Identify the main elements of working capital in an organisation and the importance of developing policies to efficiently manage these elements.

5.

Understand the relationship between investment risk and return

This module will be delivered through a combination of lectures and practical tutorials.

This module will be assessed through a combination of appropriate assessment(s) and exam. Assessments will contain theoretical and numerical parts.

Indicative Syllabus

LO1: Identify a company's capital structure and understand the implications of possible debt-equity mixes.

  • Evaluate different capital structure options available to a business
  • Explain the key points in the debate over whether a business has an optimal capital structure

LO2: Calculate the weighted average cost of capital for a business and appreciate the conditions where it is appropriate to use this.

  • Calculate the cost of equity, preference share capital and debt capital and using the market value propositions calculate the WACC (Weighted Average Cost of Capital) for a business
  • Assess its usefulness when making investment decisions

LO3: Understand the importance of dividends and discuss the factors to be considered by organisations in establishing a dividend policy.

  • Describe the nature of dividends and evaluate the arguments concerning their potential impact on shareholder wealth
  • Describe the nature of scrip dividends and discuss the case for and against this form of distribution
  • Explain what share buybacks involve and discuss the main issues that they raise

LO4: Identify the main elements of working capital in an organisation and the importance of developing policies to efficiently manage these elements.

  • Main elements: Inventory, Trade Receivables, Trade Payables, and Cash.
  • Discuss the purpose of working capital and the nature of the working capital cycle
  • Policies for the control of working capital and factors to be taken into account when managing each element of the working capital.

LO5: Understand the relationship between investment risk and return.

  • Trade-off between risk and return
