Description

The aim of this module is to enable students develop a comprehensive appreciation of aspects of financial management, including the methods for analysing capital investment opportunities and the interrelationships that exist between the various areas of finance.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Discuss the role of the finance function within a corporation including the objectives of and influences on financial decisions.

2.

Understand the need for financial planning through preparation and use of projected financial statements.

3.

Analyse and interpret the financial statements of a corporation through the use of financial ratios.

4.

Understand the importance of investment decisions and appraise capital investment decisions through the use of appropriate techniques.

5.

Identify the main sources of finance for a business including the advantages and disadvantages associated with each.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

This module will be delivered through a combination of lectures and practical tutorials.

Module Assessment Strategies

This module will be assessed through a combination of appropriate continuous assessment(s) and exam. Assessments will contain theoretical and numerical parts.

Indicative Syllabus

LO1: Discuss the role of the finance function within a corporation including the objectives of and influences on financial decisions.

  • Role of finance manager, key decisions (investment, financing, and dividend) and inter-relationship between these
  • Understanding of current business environment

LO2: Understand the need for financial planning through preparation and use of projected financial statements.

  • Preparation of projected statements: income statement, statement of financial position, and cash flow statement
  • Use of projected statements to assist with financial decision-making

LO3: Analyse and interpret the financial statements of a corporation by using the use of financial ratios.

  • Calculation of the following categories of ratios: profitability, liquidity, efficiency, gearing, and investment
  • Use of ratios to interpret the financial performance and position of the business

LO4: Understand the importance of investment decisions and appraise capital investment decisions through the use of appropriate techniques.

  • Calculation of the Net present value (NPV), Internal rate of return (IRR), Accounting Rate of Return (ARR), Payback, and Discounted Payback
  • Decision rules 
  • Comparison of techniques
