Description

This Module explores the characteristics of polluted air and investigates the effect that anthropogenic activities have on the pollution cycle.  The regulatory framework is also presented. The Module investigates air pollution assessment and the various control mechanisms that may be applied.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Communicate the environmental impact of discharging specified atmospheric pollutants from selected anthropogenic activities.

2.

Design a sampling/analysis methodology to meet the requirements of an investigative monitoring programme.

3.

Evaluate air quality based on air quality data furnished by a scientific body and assess compliance with relevant legislation.

4.

Evaluate the implications of using BAT for pollution control.

5.

Discuss the pros/cons of various air quality management tools used to protect air quality.

6.

Demonstrate an applied knowledge and understanding of salient areas of legislation related to air quality, air pollution and transnational responsibilities.

Module Assessment Strategies

The assignments encourage the learner to research, analyse, evaluate and and report on aspects of waste management. The on-line MCQs are both formative and summative and will assist the learner to assess his/her own learning and encourage timely study during the semester.

Indicative Syllabus

1)      Characteristics of unpolluted/polluted air.

2)      Sources and environmental impacts of a range of air pollutants.

3)      Legislative framework for air quality management

4)      Measuring and monitoring of polluted air streams and ambient air quality.

5)      BAT/BREF notes Clean Technology systems.

6)      Techniques to control the discharge of pollutants from a range of activities.
