Description

In this module, the participant focuses on a small number of topic areas from a selection, mainly in an Irish context.

Each participant will be encouraged to critically review and provide personal comment on the strengths and limitations of topical environmental management, policy, regulatory and other fiscal/non fiscal interventions, strategies and approaches. He/she will also consider issues that might influence environmental decision making, such as economic, social and political pressures, limitations of personnel and resources, and the implications of such influences as rhetoric, bias and competing interests. 

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Reflect on and identify his/her own learning, identify information gaps and propose a continuing professional development plan.

2.

Critically review a selection of published scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals and compare and contrast with a range of guidelines on publishing scientific papers.

3.

Devise an appropriate methodology to carry out an Environmental Review of a facility and select appropriate environmental Objectives and Targets.

4.

Devise an appropriate strategy to establish, document, implement, maintain and continually improve an Environmental Management System (EMS) suitable for a range of different organisations.

5.

Critically review the Environmental Impact Assessment process at European and National level and suggest ways of improving the process at various levels.

 

Teaching and Learning Strategies

The students will be exposed to a blend of learning activities e.g. online and recorded lectures (via Adobe Connect or similar), independent learning and directed learning. This approach is expected to address various student learning needs. Moodle will be used to upload educational material (e.g. PowerPoint presentations, recordings of online lectures and supplementary reading material) and a means of assessment (e.g. quizzes, uploading assignments and journals). The online delivery may be blended with workshops to bring the learners together to facilitate group learning.

This module is 100% Continuous Assessment.

Directed reading, independent research and independent thinking are encouraged by the assessment process.

Repeat Assessments

Repeat assessment, where relevant, will involve assignments or assessments that provides evidence that the student has met the subject and topic learning outcomes to the required standard.

  • Review a range of methodologies from existing Guidelines, Standard Operating Procedures and Published Papers and devise alternative methodologies appropriate for a range of organisations

Devise an appropriate strategy to establish, document, implement, maintain and continually improve an Environmental Management System (EMS) suitable for a range of different organisations.

  • Review of the requirements of ISO 14001:2015 and the recommendations of ISO 14004:2016

Critically review the Environmental Impact Assessment process at European and National level and suggest ways of improving the process at various levels.

  • Review current EPA Guidelines for Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and review of an Environmental Impact Assessment Report (EIAR).
