Description

This Module investigates the effects of anthropogenic activities on water resources and explores the various measures that are used to control water pollution problems (including the regulatory framework).  Treatment processes at water  and wastewater treatment plants are covered together with practical calculations for the design and operation of these plants.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Communicate the environmental impact of specific actions and/or discharging specified pollutants/pathogens to a selected waterbody.

2.

Describe and differentiate between the unit processes used within water and wastewater treatment plants and perform practical calculations relating to the design and operation of these systems

3.

Demonstrate an applied knowledge and understanding of salient areas of legislation related to water and wastewater quality, including the major obligations/provisions of the main Irish environmental Acts and S.Is.

4.

Describe and evaluate the usefulness of various water quality managment tools/measures used to protect water resources

5.

Scrutinise the roles of stakeholders involved in water resources

Module Assessment Strategies

The students will be exposed to a blend of learning activities e.g. on-line lectures (via Breeze), independent learning and directed learning. This approach is expected to address various student learning needs. Moodle will be used to upload educational material (e.g. powerpoint presentations, recordings of on-line lectures and supplementary reading material) and as a means of assessment (e.g. quizzes, uploading assignments and journals).

Indicative Syllabus

  1. Hydrological cycle
  2. Characteristics of unpolluted/polluted water resources
  3. Sources and environmental impacts of a range of water pollutants
  4. Monitoring the quality of a range of freshwater resources
  5. Protecting freshwater resources
  6. Wastewater treatment processes (physical, chemical and biological)
  7. Sludge management.
  8. Legislation addressing water quality, discharge of effluents and pollution of a water body
