ENVR09014 2013 ENVIRONMENTAL SYSTEMS
This module describes living and non-living components of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, which are used to interpret man’s impacts on systems at both local and global levels.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;
Review the facts, concepts and principles associated with edaphic environmental processes.
Classify, distinguish between and demonstrate knowledge of terrestrial, freshwater, estuarine and marine ecosystems and habitats.
Conduct an independent assessment of environmental impacts associated with anthropogenic activities and pollution pathways in river systems
Apply concepts and skills to interpret potential and actual disturbances to ecosystems on both local and global scales
Appraise current key issues impacting on ecosystems at a global level
Demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of relevant areas of environmental legislation
Indicative Syllabus
1. The Earth and Earth surface processes
2. Soils
3. Atmospheric systems and meteorology
4. Introduction to ecology, biodiversity and ecosystems
5. Terrestrial, freshwater, estuarine and marine ecosystems
6. Impacts of anthropogenic activities (forestry, mining, urbanisation, wind farms and agriculture) on ecosystems.
7. Conservation management/biodiversity/invasive species.
