Description

The module allows the student an opportunity to concentrate on a specific research problem on environmental science and to apply concepts, theories and techniques to a relevant selected topic of interest. The project can be practical or theoretical. The aim is to round the educational experience by requiring the student to apply practical research skills to the process, as well as to engage in reflective and critical analysis of the data. It should communicate the advanced standard of knowledge in the environmental management field and normally deal with potential problems in, for example, the workplace, community, and voluntary sector.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Communicate a research report for a specific environmental science /management /resource management topic

2.

Complete a programme of work requiring sustained effort with the objective of developing critical abilities in analysis, synthesis and evaluation

3.

Demonstrate achievement of the objectives of the study and appropriateness of the methodology used

4.

Collect, collate and analyse relevant data

5.

Evaluate the main findings of the study and develop appropriate recommendations

6.

Demonstrate an awareness of the relevance and potential of the study (for example to society, business and the environment)

7.

Manage a personal learning process, demonstrate monitoring and revision procedures throughout the development of the project and recognise the information and resource requirements of the study

Module Assessment Strategies

This module is 100% continuous assessment.

The final grade will be awarded from four elements:

1. Weekly reports/meetings with supervisor, overall application and initiative.

2. Project oral/poster presentations. This will facilitate development of the student's ability to communicate scientific or technical information.

3. Draft project report.

4. Final project report.

Repeat Assessments

Repeat Continuous Assessment.

Indicative Syllabus

Communicate a research problem for a specific environmental science /management /resource management topic

Students will prepare presentations detailing the plans/proposals and outcome of the project.

Complete a programme of work requiring sustained effort with the objective of developing critical abilities in analysis, synthesis and evaluation

Students will achieve the deliverables outlined in the project plan (Gantt chart) completed during phase 1 of the project.

Prepare the objectives of the study and formulate an appropriate methodology

During the project planning phase, the objectives of the study and appropriate methodology will be prepared.

Collect, collate and analyse relevant data

Students will operate a range of modern analytical instruments during the data collection phase and/or interpret relevant data obtained from relevant literature. Students will apply methods of data analysis to correctly interpret this data.

Evaluate the main findings of the study and develop appropriate recommendations

Students will complete a technical project report including details of procedures, evaluation of results and conclusions

Demonstrate an awareness of the relevance and potential of the study (for example to society, business and the environment)

Findings of the project report will include details of the wider relevance and potential for any future work identified by the project.

Manage a personal learning process, demonstrate monitoring and revision procedures throughout the development of the project and recognise the information and resource requirements of the study

Students will maintain a weekly report with details of work completed and future plans based on same.
