ENVR08009 2019 Principles of Project Management
This module aims to provide the student with a fundamental understanding of the key elements and phases of Project Management from concept to project completion, with a focus on the integration of environmental requirements. The intention of this module is to provide an overview of the fundamentals of Project Management as they relate to the Environment.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;
Identify and discuss the main elements and phases of Project Management from concept to final completion and their overall significance from an environmental perspective.
Explain the role of Environmental personnel in multidisciplinary teams involved in project management.
Explain the preliminary phase of project management with a basic understanding of preliminary design, EIA/Planning/IPPC applications, tendering and contract award.
Discuss the construction/implementation phase, the significance from an environmental perspective with a basic understanding of the mitigation measures that must/can be put in place through various legislative and voluntary mechanisms.
Explain the close-out phase of project management including final commissioning, takeover of facility / process, final contract settlement with particular reference to the role that Environmental personnel will have in this process.
Identify decommissioning phase requirements and the relationship to the environment, with particular reference to ELRA/Residuals Management Plans and Financial Provision as set out in IPPC.
Evaluate and explain what is involved in conducting a formal post-project review to determine the key lessons learnt and the implications for changes to systems and/or procedures for the future.
Use the main tools available for successful project progress monitoring and tracking including relevant software such as MS Project software and Gantt charts.
Teaching and Learning Strategies
This module will be delivered part‑time. This will include lectures and site visits augmented by independent learning and directed learning. This approach is expected to address student learning needs. Moodle will be used as a repository of educational resources and as a means of assessment (e.g. quizzes, uploading assignments and journals).
Module Assessment Strategies
Continuous Assessment including case study reviews, project plan and written report worth 50% of module marks.
50% for final theory exam.
Repeat Assessments
Repeat Continuous Assessment and/or Final Exam.
