Description

The aim of this module is to address the increasing requirement for occupational safety and health professionals to take responsibility for environmental management in the workplace. The module will focus on safety practitioner skills which are transferable to environmental issues and examine the cross functionality of EHS in the workplace.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Describe, discuss and evaluate the environmental risk management process.

2.

Analyse legislation prescribed for the control of major accident hazards with reference to case studies of major disasters and identify the key lessons to be learned.

3.

Identify and interpret environmental policy and legislation and its impact on the workplace.

4.

Examine the links between environmental and OSH issues in the workplace.

5.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

This module will be delivered full-time. This will include lectures and may include site visits, augmented by independent learning and directed learning. This approach is expected to address student learning needs. Moodle will be used as a repository of educational resources and as a means of assessment (e.g. quizzes, uploading assignments and journals).

Module Assessment Strategies

This module is 30% Continuous Assessment and 70% Final Exam. Students may be assessed on submission of an assignment report/essay and/or a short Q&A exam as well as a final theory paper. Feedback using formative assessment will be ongoing via class discussions.

Repeat Assessments

Repeat Continuous Assessment and/or Final Exam.

Over recent years, there has been a rapid expansion in the number of professionals requiring knowledge and skills in environmental management. Today, the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA) has over 15,000 members, while the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) recognises that thousands of its members now cover, health, safety and environment in their everyday remit. Essentials of environmental management provides a comprehensive introduction to the management of environmental issues. Clearly structured and illustrated, the book explains why and how organisations should manage their environmental interactions at both strategic and operational levels. Now in its third edition, Essentials focuses on: The issues and principles underpinning environmental management The principal methods to determine priorities for action The key elements of an effective environmental system based on the 'plan, do, check and act' cycle (including ISO 14001) The main operational controls and approaches to continually improve performance Supply chain issues and environmental considerations Strategic environmental pressures and how to address them, including carbon management strategies How environmental management contributes to wider business concerns, the process of sustainable development and the corporate social responsibility agenda. The authors combine a broad training background with extensive practical experience of environmental management. Essentials provides a user-friendly framework which sets out the key principles and approaches that underpin this ever-growing professional discipline.

EU Environmental Law is a critical, comprehensive and engaging account of the essential and emerging issues in European environmental law and regulation today. Suitable for advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students, the book delivers a thematic and contextual treatment of the subject for those taking courses in environmental law, environmental studies, regulation and public policy, and government and international relations. Placing the key issues in context, EU Environmental Law takes an interdisciplinary and thematic approach to help students to better understand the implementation and enforcement of environmental law and policy across Europe. It offers an accessible overview, and links theory with practical applications that will allow students to contextualise the outcomes of legal rules and their impact on public and private behaviours. It provides a definitive account of the subject, examining traditional topics such as nature conservation law, waste law and water law, alongside increasingly important fields such as the law of climate change, environmental human rights law, and regulation of GMOs and nanotechnology.

International Environmental Law offers a concise, conceptually clear, and legally rigorous introduction to contemporary international environmental law and practice. The book covers all major environmental agreements, paying particular attention to their underlying structure, main legal provisions, and practical operation. It blends legal and policy analysis, making extensive reference to the jurisprudence and scholarship, and addressing the interconnections with other areas of international law, including human rights, humanitarian law, trade and foreign investment. The material is structured into four sections - foundations, substantive regulation, implementation, and influence on other areas of international law - which help the reader to navigate the different areas of international environmental law. Each chapter includes charts summarising the main components of the relevant legal frameworks and provides a detailed bibliography. Suitable for practicing and academic international lawyers who want an accessible, up-to-date introduction to contemporary international environmental law, as well as non-lawyers seeking a concise and clear understanding of the subject.

ISBN 0901357464 ISBN-13 9780901357465

Disasters: learning the lessons for a safer world is both a tribute to the victims of past safety failures and a warning against complacency and cutting corners today. It also recognises the achievements of health and safety professionals and others in learning the lessons of past mistakes. As Trevor Kletz has written, "Someone has paid the 'tuition fess'. There is no need for you to pay them again." Illustrated throughout in colour, the book looks at over 90 accidents, incidents and safety failures. Some, like Aberfan, Chernobyl and Hillsborough, are known simply by a single place name. Others have now faded from our collective consciousness but still have important lessons for us today, such as the early fires, explosions and mining disasters that paved the way for better safety management. Disasters: learning the lessons for a safer world offers: a description of events from 1800 to the present day a wide range of incidents, from explosions and fires to floods, pollution and human and animal ill health information on the background to each incident, what happened and the lessons that were learnt an exploration of the politics of disaster and risk reduction
