Description

The purpose of this module is to introduce the learner to the core concepts and basic skills utilised in analytical chemistry. The learner will gain key skills in the assessment and implementation of analytical methods and interpretation of analytical data.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Define basic analytical theory and apply this to environmental samples.

2.

Describe suitable instrumental techniques for the analysis of environmental samples.

3.

Evaluate suitable sampling and sample pre-treatment for the determination of organic and inorganic pollutants in environmental samples.

4.

Appraise and report data generated from instrumental analysis of environmental samples.

5.

Implement basic instrumental techniques and analytical methodologies in the analysis of environmental samples.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

This module will be delivered fulltime. This will include lectures and laboratory practicals augmented by independent learning and directed learning. This approach is expected to address student learning needs. Moodle will be used as a repository of educational resources and as a means of assessment (e.g. quizzes, uploading assignments and journals).

Module Assessment Strategies

This module is 100% Continuous Assessment.

The continuous assessment will involve three (5% each) short answer/MCQ tests and the submission of laboratory reports based on the laboratory experiments undertaken during the semester. Completion of a journal covering theory problems (20%). Written report on a case study showing application of instrumental analysis (15%).

Laboratory skills and report-writing ability (50%) are assessed as part of the practical work performed during the module. Regular summative tests are used to encourage engagement with the module, monitor progress and provide feedback.

Self-assessment tests and other forms of formative assessment are provided to students to check their own progress towards achieving the learning outcomes of the module and to motivate learning.

Repeat Assessments

Repeat Continuous Assessment.
