Description

This module focuses on identifying and assessing a range of environmental impacts (e.g. on humans, air, water, soil, ecology, landscape etc.) associated with a range of economic sectors. The module also includes the planning and carrying out a detailed inspection of a site, organisation or activity; the legal and technical requirements in relation to the storage, containment (bunding) and proper management of hazardous materials; the assessment of the likely regulatory and environmental impacts associated with emergency situations;and the preparation of nutrient management plans (NMPs) for the sustainable recycling of waste sludges (biosolids) to land.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Identify and assess the most significant environmental impacts (e.g. on humans, air, water, soil, ecology, landscape etc.) associated with a range of economic sectors.

2.

Explain what is involved in the planning and execution of a site inspection to assess for compliance with environmental legislation and/or best international practice.

3.

Interpret and apply the legal and technical requirements for the storage, containment (bunding) and proper management of hazardous materials such as oil and chemicals.

4.

Determine the likely regulatory requirements and environmental impacts associated with a range of emergency situations.

5.

Explain what is involved in the preparation of a nutrient management plan for the sustainable recycling of waste sludges (biosolids) to land.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

This module will be delivered fulltime. This will include lectures augmented by independent learning and directed learning. This approach is expected to address student learning needs. Moodle will be used as a repository of educational resources and as a means of assessment (e.g. quizzes, uploading assignments and journals).

Module Assessment Strategies

This module is 50% Continuous Assessment and 50% Final Exam.

Participants must complete a Continuous Assessment Assignments (worth a total of 20% of module marks) that involves applying the theory to "real world" situations. Examples include review of the environmental impacts caused by typical activities in a specific sector or identifying and assessing examples of best international practice in relation to common environmental issues across many sectors such as bunding, management of hazardous materials, emergency planning and response etc.

In addition, two short theory question assessments (worth a total of 15% each) will assist in providing ongoing feedback to learners.
