ENTR08007 2021 Business Enterprise and Entrepreneurship
This module provides an overview to the principles of starting and leading new ventures and/or projects in start-ups, SMEs, large corporations and non-profit organisations. The student is introduced to the importance of leading and managing projects, teamwork, collaboration and leadership in developing a new business venture. Students will also consider a number of contemporary issues, in particular, intrapreneurial thinking, business process redesign, lean strategies within the changing landscape of business and the importance of fostering a culture of innovation, creativity and critical thinking in the organisations of the future.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;
Outline and evaluate the major theories and concepts from the entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial literature and relate them to practical applications in a variety of settings.
Develop and demonstrate an understanding of entrepreneurial thinking and the interdependent nature of entrepreneurship, innovation, creativity, critical thinking and leadership:
Develop ideas into workable business concepts and models, and assess the knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviours necessary to bring an innovation to the workplace and to market
Critique and appraise the role that business process reengineering (BRR) plays in the organisations of the future.
Teaching and Learning Strategies
Seminars, workshops, flash presentations, creative pedagogies, lectures will all be incorporated within the learning environments. These pedagogical choices will support the students learning and engagement with their journey of learning.
Module Assessment Strategies
Assessment One 40%
The first assessment is a group presentation conducted through the medium of a formal presentation and defence of a proposed business plan in order that the student advances their entrepreneurial thinking skills. Students will be required to develop the business plan using the following guidelines; Project Concept - is the proposed product/service innovative or an import substitution. Is it feasible and is there a market for it? Planning and Projections - has the market been thoroughly researched and potential competitors identified? The professionalism of Approach - have all aspects of the business been fully considered and are the necessary practical skills in place to deliver on the concept? Presentation - is the submission presented clearly, in an easy-to-read format?
Assessment Two 60%
The focus of this assessment is to align organisational change to intrapreneurial thinking. Students are required to identify a business process within an organisation for re-engineering. Utilising the ICT capabilities available students are required to design and produce a Business Process Reengineering report using industry standards. Students will be required to present their work, clearly outlining their rationale for choosing the Business Process and the integral role that BPR plays

Indicative Syllabus
LO1) Outline and evaluate the major theories and concepts from the entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial literature and relate them to practical applications in a variety of settings.
The learner will receive an introduction to entrepreneurial thinking and leadership, which may include the entrepreneurial mindset, identifying characteristics of successful entrepreneurs and entrepreneurial teams, and leading the entrepreneurship and intrapreneurship process
O2) Develop and demonstrate an understanding of entrepreneurial thinking and the interdependent nature of entrepreneurship, innovation, creativity, critical thinking and leadership:
The learner will be introduced to value propositions and business models. It is intended that the student will also develop leadership, innovation and creativity traits through individual and team-based techniques, and demonstrate characteristics of entrepreneurial role models and leaders.
LO 3) Develop ideas into workable business concepts and models, and assess the knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviours necessary to bring innovation to the workplace and to market.
The learner will develop an understanding of the processes of bringing a new venture to the marketplace, which may include, for example, market analysis, models of new ventures, business planning, effecting organisational change, stakeholder management and potential growth strategies.
LO 4) Critique and appraise the role that business process reengineering (BRR) plays in the organisations of the future.
The learner will reflect on the importance of innovation, creativity and critical thinking in the organisation of the future. The student will consider and reflect on the nuances of BPR, and the challenges associated with BPR. They will explore the complexity of implementing BPR using in house ICT capabilities, developing an understanding of the role of business process review in an innovative intrapreneurial organisation.
