ENTR08006 2019 Enterprise and Innovation in Health
Students will consider self-employment, identify new business opportunities, conduct a feasibility study and produce a business plan and funding application.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;
determine the personal and professional traits of an entrepreneur and reflect on these to establish the learner's competencies and gaps for entrepreneurship.
generate and analyse new ideas for the health & wellbeing business sector and conduct an outline feasibility study.
explain the components of a business plan and develop an outline business plan, including a supportive outline marketing plan.
identify various sources of new business funding.
Teaching and Learning Strategies
This module will be delivered full time.
Theoretical component of the course delivered through lectures & supplemented by self-directed learning activities.
Practical component: Workshop in a computer laboratory setting allows for facilitated sessions where students learn in a group setting, and gain timely feedback from the lecturer to check their own progress towards achieving the learning outcomes of the module and to motivate learning.
Module Assessment Strategies
Presentation (30%: Individual Mark)
(1) Idea Generation - Discuss & Assess the Process & Present Results of the Process
(2) Outline Feasibility Study Report - Discuss & Assess the Process & Present Results of the Process
Business Plan Report (40%):
Present orally the Executive Summary as part of a pitch for funding to support 1st year business activities. (Individual Mark: 20%)
Written Report: Present in written format a business case for a new business idea (Group mark: 20%)
Learning Journal (30%: Individual Mark)
Complete targeted activities to assess knowledge and understanding of the theory supporting the module, examples: short answer tests; mcqs; short discussion submissions; short essays.

Idea Generation:
- Explore the terminology of creativity and experience the creative process.
- Know the various methods of achieving legal protection for new ideas.
- Assess feasibility of ideas generated.
Business Planning
- Explain rationale for various sections to a business plan, and know how to develop all sections.
- Appreciate the different legal structures available to start-up businesses and assess the advantages and disadvantages of each.
- Assess the Macro Business Environment.
- Customer Relationship Management.
- Know entrepreneurship in various relevant sectors e.g. Health, Sports & Fitness, Social, Tourism,
- Know business types: business to business and business to consumer. 'People', 'Product' & 'Services' oriented businesses.
