Description

The Dissertation topics must relate to material/practices/technology/legislation which is taught on the course. The Dissertation can be started once the taught modules of the Post Graduate Diploma are completed.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Identify, conceptualise, formulate and communicate a research proposal for a specific area of energy management.

2.

Complete a major programme of work requiring sustained intellectual and creative effort with the objective of developing critical abilities in analysis, synthesis and evaluation.

3.

Generate recommendations based upon review and analysis of the work accomplished.

4.

Present both in written form and verbally, different elements of the thesis, based on coherent arguments for the assessment of needs, influences, consequences and achievements.

5.

To manage a personal learning process, and to demonstrate monitoring and revision procedures through the development of the thesis.

6.

To integrate knowledge and skills from different areas of the programme in order to fulfil a well-defined objective.

7.

Identify, evaluate and apply appropriate research methods.

8.

Recognise the information and resource requirements related to a proposed investigation and employ them appropriately.

9.

Demonstrate an advanced understanding of their chosen area of study.

10.

Illustrate clear understanding of legal aspects of energy management at Irish and EU level, relating to their chosen area of study

11.

An understanding and critical awareness of theoretical concepts and ideas, and significant underpinning theory relating to thier chosen area of study.

12.

Develop novel solutions to issues which arise during the development of their thesis.

13.

Report and advise on the legal obligations relating to their area of study, and on prospective Irish and EU policy changes

Indicative Syllabus

The dissertation must include some original level 9 research, including a comprehensive, critical review of the literature and knowledge at the forefront of the field. This research will be based on data gathered through an in-depth literature review of the chosen topic. The methodology used may be survey based, and/or include an analysis of data gathered during the literature review process.  Results from the methodology should be discussed thoroughly by the learner in order to demonstrate the learner’s understanding of the dissertation topic. Recommendations should be made at the end of the dissertation based on the results of the study.

The dissertation should include a bibliography based on the Harvard Methodology.

Process of Topic Selection:

Dissertation topics must relate to material/practices/technology/legislation which is taught on the course.

It is up to the learner to suggest topics for the dissertation. Final topic must be decided upon within four weeks of the start of the course. Supervisors will be appointed after one week, selection of which will be made generally based on the learner’s area of interest.

Engagement with Supervisor:

Students will be allocated 10 hours per semester with the supervisor. It will be up to the student to submit work for review prior to meetings with their supervisor. Supervisors will be allocated a total of 30 hours (20 contact hours and 10 hours for review/correction) for work on the dissertations. 25% of the overall mark is allocated to the student’s performance during contact with the supervisor.

Viva Voce

Students will be expected to attend and present at a Viva (either in the college or online). Also present at the viva will be the supervisor, and second reader All members of the Exam Board will have a right to attend all vivas.
