Description

Energy Systems 3 builds from Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics taught in Energy Systems 2. Advanced topics in both subjects will be covered, and the overlapping areas of both subjects will be highlighted. This module will also introduce computer simulation and modelling of both fluidic and thermal problems as well as practical laboratory experiments.

Fluid mechanics will cover: (i) viscous flow in pipes and ducts, friction and head loss (ii) Flow over immersed bodies, boundary layer equations, the flat plate (iii) Simulation of Fluid flows over airfoils, and other bodies using computational fluid dynamics techniques.

The thermodynamics section will cover: (i) Steam / Gas turbine cycles (ii) Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Equipment  (iii) Design of Heat exchangers (iv) Use of CFD software for solving heat transfer problems.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Analyse practical problems relating to fluid fow in pipework and ducts

2.

Analyse and solve problems relating to fluid flow over immersed bodies

3.

Simulate fluid flows over airfoils and other bodies using CFD.

4.

Demonstrate understanding of and determine operating efficiencies or Power plants including Rankine and Brayton cycles, co-generation, and heat exchange devices.

5.

Specify and select refrigeration and Airconditioning equipment for a given purpose.

6.

Using CFD, understand and apply the different modes of heat transfer to model and simulate thermal interactions in engineering settings.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Lecture is the primary method of delivery. As in previous modules (Energy Systems 1& 2),  key concepts will be explained and followed through with graded exercises leading on to practical problem examples. Repetitive (property and steam tables, interpolations) exercises will be supplemented on Moodle outside of class to ensure student proficiency. Continual Assessment will be in the form of a simulation assignment using CFD tools to solve an industrial problem with both fluidic and thermal aspects.

Module Assessment Strategies

This subject will be assessed by a midterm CA assignment and end of term assessment.

Repeat Assessments

Repeat assessment will be by way of sitting another examination on the subject. Alternatively, at the discretion of the lecturer, assignments covering the deficient areas of the course may be set.

Required & Recommended Book List

Required Reading
2006-04-07 Introduction to Heat Transfer Wiley
ISBN 0471457272 ISBN-13 9780471457275

Noted for its readability, comprehensiveness and relevancy, the new fifth edition of this bestselling book provides readers with an accessible examination of the heat transfer field. Theyll gain a better understanding of the terminology and physical principles for any process or system involving heat transfer. And theyll find out how to develop representative models of real processes and systems, and draw conclusions concerning process/systems design or performance from the attendant analysis.

Required Reading
2016-03-21 Fundamentals of Aerodynamics McGraw-Hill Education
ISBN 1259129918 ISBN-13 9781259129919

Fundamentals of Aerodynamics is meant to be read. The writing style is intentionally conversational in order to make the book easier to read. The book is designed to talk to the reader; in part to be a self-teaching instrument. Learning objectives have been added to each chapter to reflect what is believed to be the most important items to learn from that particular chapter. This edition emphasizes the rich theoretical and physical background of aerodynamics, and marbles in many historical notes to provide a background as to where the aerodynamic technology comes from. Also, new with this edition, are "Integrated Work Challenges" that pertain to the chapter as a whole, and give the reader the opportunity to integrate the material in that chapter, in order to solve a "bigger picture". McGraw-Hill Education's Connect, is also available as an optional, add on item. Connect is the only integrated learning system that empowers students by continuously adapting to deliver precisely what they need, when they need it, how they need it, so that class time is more effective. Connect allows the professor to assign homework, quizzes, and tests easily and automatically grades and records the scores of the student's work. Problems are randomized to prevent sharing of answers an may also have a "multi-step solution" which helps move the students' learning along if they experience difficulty.
