Description

This module provides the learner with practical guidance on the processes and analysis required for collision analysis and road safety auditing of both urban and rural road schemes by means of workshops which incorporate classroom workshop activities and facilitated site visits with unsupervised team audits of current road schemes.

The module is assessed by means of two major individual assignments that relate to both the facilitated and group site visits and workshops, and subsequent analysis and reporting of the safety characteristics of specific road schemes on an individual basis.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Conduct, in a group or team, a collision investigation and safety analysis pertaining to a section of rural or urban road visited to meet the requirements of the current TII Road Safety standards and EU RISM Directive.

2.

Appraise and report critically on their own the findings of a collision investigation and safety analysis of a section of rural or urban road to meet current TII and EU standards.

3.

Perform and evaluate in a group or team a site audit at Stage 3 in the TII Road Safety Audit process (Completion of construction prior to opening) for an approved existing urban or rural road scheme.

4.

Analyse and assess the findings from a Stage 3 Road Safety Audit for a road scheme using the format prescribed in the TII Road Safety Audit standards.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

The teaching and learning strategy is based on the provision of  Moodle resources, independent learning, and workshops facilitated by expert lecturers and practitioners, that incorporate elements of enquiry and project-based learning, and submitted technical reports based on group and individual project work and analysis, based on the findings from supervised group and unsupervised small group site visits and safety assessments. 

Module Assessment Strategies

The assessment incorporates practical assignments and site visits. The learner must achieve a grade of 60% or higher in order to achieve a pass in this module.

The assessment strategy incorporates a blend of formative and summative assessments incorporating final written examination, continuous assessment of assignments and projects, and formative assessment utilising off-site and on-campus workshops, facilitated supervised site visits, Moodle VLE resources and tutorials. Summative assessment will involve a number of continuous assessment activities, including practical assignments, and major project reports.

Project/practical/workshop elements will operate on both individual and group contribution format with individual submission of assignments. The assessment strategy for each project/practical shall be advised to the learners prior to undertaking the work.

In the case of group project work the methodologies for establishing individual contributions to group work shall be clearly set out, agreed and advised to the learners prior to undertaking each project/practical and may utilise one or more of the following methodologies:

  1. Allow the project team to decide on the roles and extent of work that each member shall be responsible for and incorporate each project element in an overall project submission and/or presentation. These roles are agreed and communicated to the lecturer prior to commencing the project and subsequent project discussions are encouraged to be via the Moodle Forum.
  2. Peer assessment of individual contribution by group members, aka "Sizing the Slice". This is utilised by the examiner in the assessment process.
  3. Learners sign a Student Project Charter which verifies that they will contribute equally and transparently to the group project workload and avoid plagiarism, etc.
  4. Incorporation of the views of the group learners in the design of the assessment strategy for the project/practical, including methodologies to determine the individual contributions for various tasks for each project.

Repeat Assessments

The learner must undertake continuous assessment project work depending on the particular failed element(s) to achieve an overall pass grade.

Indicative Syllabus

Practical (Workshops, Facilitated and student group Site Visits and Reports):

  1. Project no. 1- Collision Analysis Report:

    Collision investigation & analysis by facilitated site visit as a single group with lecturer.

    In small groups, analyse collision data and findings.  Individual report submitted.

  2. Project No 2 - Stage 3 RSA Report:

           Stage 3 RSA Workshop  and Facilitated Group Site Visit.

           Non-facilitated Stage 3 RSA site visit in groups at approved road scheme location. Individual report submitted.
