Description

This module focuses on the materials, technology and procedures used to design and manage road pavements, with reference to the Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII)  and Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport (DTTS) documentation.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Characterise and appraise the suitability of materials used in pavement construction and rehabilitation.

2.

Formulate the fundamental engineering principles underpinning pavement structural design.

3.

Design flexible, rigid and non-conventional pavements.

4.

Assess pavement performance and implement pavement management processes.

5.

Diagnose/interpret pavement distress and formulate appropriate maintenance and rehabilitation treatments

Teaching and Learning Strategies

The module will be delivered using online lectures and workshops.

Module Assessment Strategies

Assessment will include continuous assessment exercises and final exam.

Repeat Assessments

Repeat assessment will involve a repeat of failed elements of the module - final examination and/or resubmission of failed continuous assessment items.

Indicative Syllabus

Introduction to pavement engineering. Classification of pavement type.  Function of various layers.

Pavement materials: Aggregates. Unbound materials, hydraulically-bound materials, bituminous binders, asphalts. Composition. Mechanical/thermal properties. Testing. Compaction. Recycling

Structural design of flexible pavements: Approaches to design. Pavement modelling and traffic loading. Material characterisation and distress modes. Application

Pavement surface properties: Texture, ride quality, skid resistance, noise.

Pavement management: Pavement management systems, processes, benefits

Flexible pavement maintenance: Pavement evaluation and problem diagnosis/prognosis. Rehabilitation strategies. Overlays. Reconstruction. Surface treatments.

Rigid pavements. Types, stresses, joints, reinforcement. Design. Deterioration.
