Description

This module introduces the learner to the design and detailing of simple elements in reinforced concrete.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Appreciate the process to design reinforced concrete elements in accordance with the relevant design codes

2.

Distinguish between ultimate and serviceability limit states

3.

Design reinforced concrete simply supported beams and one-way spanning slabs

4.

Perform and present design calculations in a clear and logical fashion

5.

Prepare reinforcement detail drawings and prepare the associated reinforcement bending schedules

Teaching and Learning Strategies

This module will be delivered using blended learning techniques. This will include online lectures (via adobe connect/MS Teams or similar), labs and workshops augmented by independent learning and directed learning. This approach is expected to address student-learning needs. A learning platform such as Moodle will be used to upload educational material (i.e. presentations and recordings of online lectures plus supplementary reading material) and as a means of assessment (e.g. quizzes, uploading assignments and journals). This blended approach (lectures and workshops) brings students together to facilitate group learning.

Module Assessment Strategies

This module is 30% continuous assessment and 70% final exam.

Continuous assessments will include in-class tests / assignments and lab practicals.

Repeat Assessments

Repeat Continuous Assessment and/or Final Exam.

Indicative Syllabus

LO1: Appreciate the process to design reinforced concrete elements in accordance with the relevant design codes.

  • Eurocode 2: Design of Concrete Structures

LO2: Distinguish between ultimate and serviceability limit states.

  • Limit State Design

LO3: Design reinforced concrete simply supported beams and one-way spanning slabs.

  • Analysis of the Section for Bending (Singly Reinforced, Rectangular Section with Compression Reinforcement, Flanged Sections)
  • Shear
  • Bond
  • Serviceability and Durability Requirements
  • Design of Simply Supported and Cantilever Beams
  • Design of One-Way Spanning Slabs

LO4: Perform and present design calculations in a clear and logical fashion.

  • Reinforced concrete design project(s). The practical work is designed to supplement the fundamental principles covered in lectures.
