Description

This module is an introduction to manufacturing techniques and engineering technologies. This module is intended to enable the student to acquire the basic practical skills in engineering workshop practice, to produce mechanical components using relevant manufacturing methods. Students will recognise the importance of workshop safety and develop the necessary knowledge and practical workshop skills in manufacturing techniques.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Demonstrate good knowlege of health & safety in a workshop environment and employ safe working practices when operating machine tools.

2.

Identify and use various types of measuring and marking out equipment, including scribers, squares, calipers, vernier instruments and micrometers.

3.

Demonstrate basic fabrication skills to produce components using hand processes, drilling operations, bending & forming operations and basic joining methods including welding.

4.

Produce basic machined components to a certain degree of accuracy using turning and milling operations, operating the machines in a correct and safe manner.

5.

Demonstrate a good understanding of workshop processes and equipment, through the description and identification of such processes and equipment used.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Students will participate in an active-learning environment, which will foster excitement for engineering through the series of assessment. A series of demonstrations will be used and students encouraged to contribute to the discussions around these demonstrations. A clear link between the theoretical and the practical aspects of these technologies will be reinforced throughout the module.

Module Assessment Strategies

Formative feedback will be used on an ongoing basis. Students will receive constructive feedback on their strengths and areas that need further improvements. Peer assessment and self assessment will be encouraged throughout the project using checklists and clear marking criteria.

Continuous assessment will involve the assessment of all assignments undertaken in class, both practical and theoretical.

Repeat Assessments

This will normally require repeat attendance; however, for students with high attendance, an appropriate repeat assessment may be set, at the discretion of the Examination Board.

Health & Safety

Health and safety standards and regulations, Safety signs & signals, Workshop health & safety precautions, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Marking Out and Measuring

Datums, coordinates, Marking out equipment; surface table/plates, angle plates, vee blocks, engineers square, centre square, scribers, height & surface gauges, dividers. Measuring equipment: rules, vernier instruments, micrometers.

Cutting Tools & Fluids

Cutting tools, cutting tool materials,cutting speeds & feeds, cutting fluids.

Hand processes

Files, hacksaws, power tools, bending and forming operations.

Drilling

Pillar drills, tool & work holding methods, drilling operations; drilling, reaming, countersink counterbore, tapping.

Joining Methods

Mechanical fasteners, screw threads, locking devices, riveting, soldering, brazing, gas welding.

Turning

Centre lathe, work holding equipment, Centre lathe operations; facing, parallel turning, chamfering, drilling, tapping.

Milling

Horizontal & vertical milling machines, work holding equipment, Milling operations; face milling end milling slot milling.
