ENG06071 2019 Digital Electronics
The aim of this module is to introduce students to the world of digital electronics. It is written in such a way as to give the student a good foundation to build upon as they continue in their chosen studies. The theoretical aspects of the module will be supported by practical laboratory sessions.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;
Understand what is meant by digital signals.
Perform Simple Operations in Binary, Hexadecimal and BCD
Discern between different logic gates, including but not limited to AND, NAND, OR , NOR, XOR.
Simplification of Combinational Logic
Describe the operation of basic flip-flops and their applications.
Write up lab reports on practical exercises completed in the lab.
Teaching and Learning Strategies
A 2-hour lecture will be provided weekly. The material for the weekly lecture will be made available beforehand, to allow students to prepare as necessary. Where relevant, further reading will be made available post-lecture.
A 2-hour lab session will be provided weekly. The intent is for the student to put into practice the theory gained during the weekly lecture.
Module Assessment Strategies
An end of semester written exam, a midterm and lab assignments will be given to assess the module.
Repeat Assessments
A repeat exam during the Autumn sitting will be made available.
In addition, an opportunity to submit repeat assessment work will be available for the Autumn sitting.
