Description
The module addresses the need for practitioners, working with children and young people, to provide an environment where the welfare of the child is paramount. Students will complete the Health Services Executive accredited Keeping Safe Child Protection training, in line with Children First Guidance for the Protection and Welfare of Children, 2011. Areas addressed in the training include signs and symptoms of abuse, reporting procedures of suspected abuse along with good recruitment practices. Working with case studies, students will complete case conference reports and examine their role and contribution to multi agency information sharing meetings. Discussing child protection concerns with parents is considered good practice and students will examine this in detail through role play. They will also consider the necessity to support children, parents and staff where there are ongoing child protection investigations. Major abuse enquiries will be studies to demonstrate the need for knowledge of and adherence to child protection policies and procedures.
Students will be required to reflect on their knowledge and attitudes throughout the module.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;
1.
Describe the procedures for identifying and reporting concerns as laid out in Children First, National Guidance for the Protection and Welfare of Children 2011.
2.
Discuss child abuse enquiries, at Irish and internatioinal level which have contributed to current child protection polices and practice.
3.
Outline the roles and procedures associated with multi-agency conferences.
4.
Demonstrate how a professional works with, children, parents and staff where there are child protection concerns.
5.
Reflectively evaluate their own learning and skills acquisition identifying strategies for future developments and demonstrating an understanding of reflective models.
Teaching and Learning Strategies
Lectures and tutorials
Attendance will be monitored in lectures and tutorials.
Module Assessment Strategies
Using a case study students will work through a number of steps for assessment purposes:
Identify and name child protection concerns.
In a role play, which will be assessed, the student will inform a parent/guardian of the child protection concern and steps they are required to take at this point.
Complete a HSE referral form. Complete a report for a child protection case conference.
A written reflective assignment and a reflective presentation focused on learning strategies.(PDP)
Repeat Assessments
Individual assignment.
Indicative Syllabus
Students will complete the Keeping Safe, Children First, Child Protection accredited training which addresses the following in four modules:
Awareness of Child Protection issues.
Creating a safe environment.
Crearing an Inclusive environment.
Management of staff and volunteers
In addition to the accredited course the syllabus will address:
Working and supporting children, parents and staff where there are child protection concerns.
Role of supervision. Models of supervision.
Writing a child protection report for a multi agency case conference.
Report writing skills. Use of appropriate language.
Obtaining support for families through the use of Family Welfare Conferences or the Identification of Need process.
Examining case studies to identify if abuse is occurring and making a decision when it appropriate to refer to Health Service Executive.
Completing the required HSE referral form along with a detailed report for a multi agency case conference.
Reflecting on their attitudes towards the child, parents and the abuser, along with their ability to create a safe environment for children.

Commencement of placement is reliant on a record of attendance, as noted by module leader, and successful completion of module assessment(s).
