DSGN08075 2019 Design in Context 2 (Research Report)
This module concentrates on the value and use of specific research strategies that are determined by studio projects. The emphasis is on positioning the student's design project in the context of contemporary design perspectives and on developing effective research methodologies through the submission of a Research Document that critically charts and evaluates their research path.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;
Generate, collect, collate and communicate primary and secondary sources of data and information
Initiate, identify and integrate relevant research methodologies for meaningful design solutions
take responsibility for the scheduling and management of research initiatives from inception to fruition
determine ways of addressing issues pertaining to function, use, ergonomics, styling and trends in a variety of research-for-design contexts
engage effectively in creative decision-making processes and problem-solving activities in an independent manner
Teaching and Learning Strategies
Teaching and Learning Strategies are Lecture, Seminar and Workshop based. Lectures supported by images and texts, provide the context and background to area under discussion. Seminars offer opportunities for more detailed thematic textual analysis and group discussion. Workshops allow for focused interaction, research methodologies, oral communication and structured debate.
Module Assessment Strategies
Formative assessment deliverables address the module learning outcomes.
- Application of informed research and visual methodologies to document writing.
- Proficiency in information literacy skills
- written composition elements
- Peer/Client presentations.
100% Coursework including;

ISBN 9781462514380 ISBN-13 1462514383
This user-friendly book provides a step-by-step guide to using the five major approaches to research design: quantitative, qualitative, mixed methods, arts-based, and community-based participatory research. Chapters on each approach follow a unique format--they present a template for a research proposal and explain in detail how to conceptualize and fill in every section. Terminology commonly used within each approach is identified, and key moments of ethical decision making are flagged. Interdisciplinary research examples draw on current events and social justice topics. Unique coverage includes hot topics: replication studies and data sharing, tailoring proposals to different audiences, and more. The book also includes a general introduction to social research; an in-depth, practical discussion of ethics; and a chapter on how to begin a research study, from planning a topic to developing a research question via a literature review. Pedagogical Features *Multiple "Review Stops" in each chapter--quick quizzes with answer keys. *End-of-chapter writing exercises, research activities, and suggested resources. *Bold-face key terms and an end-of-book glossary. *Boxed tips from experts in the respective approaches. *Supplemental PowerPoint slides for instructors using the book in a class.
