Description

During the course of this module, the student-designer engages and applies, through different elements and activities, essential transferable and soft skills to communicate ideas, perspectives and findings relating to their own design work. Central to the development and promotion of a credible designer profile and presence is the identification, articulation and visualisation of attributes, goals and values pertinent to personal/ career objectives.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Disseminate knowledge and apply skills in ways that are relevant to pitching design-related expertise and insights and the development of practice.

2.

Deliver persuasive presentations of ideas or designs using appropriate media.

3.

Identify and apply strategies for securing employment in the design market and/or developing entrepreneurship in a design-related field.

4.

Produce professional written documentation and content relevant to the realm of Design including project-specific reports and CV/online profile elements.

5.

Collaborate with relevant stakeholders in making decisions on student designer identity and an emerging designer practice.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

The Teaching and Learning Strategy include Lectures, Seminars and Workshop based activities. Lectures supported by images and texts, provide the context and background to topics under discussion. Seminars offer opportunities for more in-depth group discussion. Workshops allow for focused interaction, research methodologies, oral communication and structured debate.

Module Assessment Strategies

The approach used in the in-class assessments(s) is to get students to work with the widest range of methods of communications as is practicable. Presentations, formative task exercises, research and individual project work are all part of this assessment strategy.

Repeat Assessments will be based on existing course material that allow the students to repeat failed CA elements in Autumn.

Indicative Syllabus

Who are you as a design practitioner and what are your aims and ambitions within your specific area?

Seminars, workshops, talks/lectures and other relevant activities use a range of professional skills and communication strategies to articulate a relevant Designer identity and prepare for design-oriented career paths.The proposed indicative syllabi for this module is based around the theory, practice and application of two topic areas:

1) PROFESSIONAL COMMUNICATIONS: Promoting the student-designer

  • Advanced Communications Methods: Interpersonal communication, effective communication,  non-verbal communication,
  • Learning and facilitating styles:  Theory and practice
  • Professional Presentation Skills: Structuring, Preparing and Delivering presentations. Promotion of self through professional practice involving all three areas of communication: Verbal – interview/presentation/pitch Visual – presentation of professional design work Written – CV
  • Design & Professional Practice : Design sector and networks. Profile and realm of design practice. The structure and roles of  different Design professions Roles and responsibilities of the Designer. Processes & procedures.
  • Promotion of Self as a Design Professional: Personal areas of interest.  SWOT Analysis, Digital Portfolio elements, Linkedin profile.

2) DESIGN: Material relevant to professional/career pathway:

  • Profile: Linkedin, CV, Creative Resume Social Media, YAADA Showcase, Digital material & content
  • Portfolio of experience(s): Project work, Bio, Manifesto statement(s) Endorsements.
  • Design Projects: Generating & visualising Design project work. Reporting  & evaluating.
