2010-01-01 Understanding Interpersonal Communication: Making Choices in Changing Times, Enhanced Edition Cengage Learning
ISBN 9780495908753 ISBN-13 0495908754
West and Turner's UNDERSTANDING INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION: MAKING CHOICES IN CHANGING TIMES, Enhanced Second Edition, empowers your students by providing both the knowledge and practical skills they need to make choices as effective communicators in today's rapidly changing and technologically advanced society. The text eliminates the perceived division between theory and practice and clarifies their fundamental interconnections. The text powerfully supports skill development by exploring communication concepts in tandem with realistic scenarios and concrete behavior choices students can make in order to become more effective communicators. Rather than telling students how to communicate, the authors list a toolbox of key skills pertaining to each theory so students can actively choose and experiment with strategies appropriate for a given situation. Filled with realistic examples and scenarios that reflect the diversity and interactions of today's students, UNDERSTANDING INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION: MAKING CHOICES IN CHANGING TIMES, Enhanced Second Edition, makes clear connections between theory, skills, and the life situations we all encounter on a daily basis. This enhanced second edition includes the student workbook bound in at the end of the text, with chapter goals, outlines, interactive student activities, InfoTrac activities, and journal entries. "The success of a piece of communication has always been dependent on the connection between content, form, audience and context - what the message is, who it's aimed at, what it looks like, and how and where it's communicated. In recent years the balance between these elements has shifted. Graphic and communication designers have traditionally offered style and packaging solutions for brands and products. However, as the nature and complexity of brands has changed within our economy, a designer's ability to analyse, understand and clarify has become ever more important. In this world, the thinking behind a communication outcome is much more significant to the income of a creative agency, and designers are often employed to help a client understand what sort of design they need, rather than simply to style up what a client thinks they want. It is this shift in the designer's role that this book examines, through themes of brand, experience, conversation, participation, navigation, advocacy and critique.Providing educators, students and design practitioners with an overview of the most important and exciting developments in contemporary communication design, Communication Design identifies a series of emerging modes of creative practice to help clarify the mind and skill-sets that are inherent to successful working practice"--
2006 How Designers Think Routledge
ISBN 9780750660778 ISBN-13 0750660775
In this fourth edition, Bryan Lawson continues his discussion, trying to understand how designers think. He does this by mapping out the issues concerned with the design process, with design problems and solutions and design thinking. This edition adds to the previous debates by including a new chapter on 'Design as Conversation' reflecting on how designers, either consciously or unconsciously, monitor, reflect on, control and change their thinking. It also includes a new series of case studies on notable designers including the racing car designer Gordon Murray, product designer James Dyson, and architects such as Edward Cullinan and Glenn Murcott. * A unique look at the psychology of the designer that provides a greater insight to the process of design * 'Demystifies' the complexity of the subject and uncovers new ways that design can be done * Conclusions are drawn from years of research and provide the very latest debate on the subject

The last decade has seen radical changes in higher education. Long held assumptions about university and academic autonomy have been shattered as public and political interest in quality, standards, and accountability have intensified efforts for reform. The increased influence of the state and employers in the curriculum of higher education is exemplified by the increasing emphasis on so-called core or transferable skills; an emphasis supported by the Dearing Report which identified what called 'key' skills as necessary outcomes of all higher education programs. However, there is little research evidence to support such assertions, or to underpin the identification of good practice in skill development in higher education or employment settings. Further, prescription has outrun the conceptualization of such skills, little attention has been paid to their theoretical underpinnings and definitions, or to assumptions concerning their transfer. Thus the study reported in this book sets out to gain enhanced understandings of skill acquisitions in higher education and employment settings with the aim of informing and improving provision The findings and analyses provide a clear conceptualization of core genres skills, and models of good practice in their delivery, derived from initiatives by employers and staff in higher education Student and Graduate employee perspectives on skill delivery and acquisition are presented, together with a clearer understanding of t
