DSGN07096 2019 CAD for Design 5 (Product)
This module further develops the students Computer/CAD skills to enable them to produce 3d models of real world products. The module will build of model complexity both externally, in terms of the ability to model more complex geometric forms and internally, in terms of attention to design detail such as clips and fasteners, part mouldability etc. Other Computer Aided Engineering technologies will also be introduced such as Computer Aided Manufacture and Reverse Engineering.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;
Produce CAD models of real world products.
Produce geometrically complex CAD models.
Model designs for different manufacture processes; metal casting, sheet metal forming and injection moulding.
Produce Designs of products taking into account process capability.
Model products incorporating design detail such as lips, bosses, clips etc.
Use assocated technologies such as Computer Aided Manufacture, Rapid Prototyping and Reverse Engineering.
Module Assessment Strategies
The subject will be evaluated by a combination of tutorials, assignments and final examination.
The student will recieve instruction in a specific area in the form of a tutorial. This will be followed by assingments where the student applies the knowledge gained. The semester will conclude with a final exam and/or project.
Module Dependencies
Indicative Syllabus
Advanced solid modelling: Creation of complex parts using lofts, sweeps, replace face, divide part and Boolean operations etc. Use of equations/variables to build design intent into model, use of design tables for the creation of families of similar parts. Bottom up and top down design. Linked parts, parent and child relationships etc.
Surface modelling: Modelling of complex curves by, derivation from planar curves, intersection of geometric features or projection of a 2d sketch onto a 3d surface. Creation of assorted surface types using, loft, sweep, bounded. Conversion from surface to solid geometry by joining/stitching and thickness application.
