Students originate project concepts from the examination of given work or living environments and develop appropriate solutions. This involves project planning, design, the selection of processes, problem solving and decision making. Students are encouraged to link up with external "users/experts" to carry out primary research, focus groups, user testing and evaluation.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;


Originate and manage a self selected design project


Resolve design development issues through research and expert involvement


Determine appropriate development methods to meet user expectations and cost/quantity targets


Demonstrate proficiency as a design professional


Utilise appropriate media to demonstrate the solution and its development in a convincing showcase presentation.

Module Assessment Strategies

Projects are assessed by the assignment of marks to various project deliverables.  Project deliverables typically include User Research,  Conceptual development of ideas,  Design Development,  Prototyping, Presentation.  A percentage mark is assigned for each deliverable, adding up to a total of 100%.

Research 20%, Concepts 20%, Development 20%, Deliverables 20%, Professional Practice 20%.

Indicative Syllabus

Students identify and present short proposals for three project concepts from a given work or living environment.  These proposals are considered by staff and student for final selection. 

The student then agrees areas of research that need to be undertaken and identifies required expert and user group collaborators.
