Description

This module is split into two digital representation elements namely; SketchUp and Photoshop. The module allows the learner to develop and convey design ideas using digital design software. The module will explore the transformative nature of analogue conversion.

In the first part of the module the learner will explore how to create and produce digital models in a 3D environment, developing a working knowledge of SketchUp. This dynamic 3D modelling program allows the user to visualise their ideas using its tailored tools and components. The student will generate sketch-up models, test and analyse spatial and design qualities and compose a fully inhabited 3-D interior space.

The second part of the module will develop skills and techniques to refine, edit and manipulate design images through the medium of Photoshop.The learner will learn how to recompose basic sketches or diagrams as creative digital expressions of design concepts or 3D interior spatial views inhabited with colour, texture, form, fittings, furniture, light, materiality and people. Also, the module will explore the digital transformation of design photographs of digital / physical scale models, as well as, real world spaces and places.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Generate three-dimensional digital models of Interior Space.

2.

Test and compose spatial and design qualities within a fully inhabited interior space using SketchUp.

3.

Utilise digital image editing software to convert hand sketches/diagrams/drawings into comprehensive digital graphics.

4.

Create graphic interior compositions using photographs of scale models, real places, furnishings, materials and light.

5.

Compose a 3D digital graphic inhabited with colour, texture, form, fittings, furniture, light, materiality and people.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Digital Media for Design: SketchUp & Photoshop is taught using a combination of lectures, presentations, practical based tutorials and workshops that are situated in a computer lab environment. Both individual and group work modes are utilised throughout.

Module Assessment Strategies

Formative and summative continuous assessment modes using a range of techniques which include group and/or individual work.

Assessment is continuous and is undertaken at the conclusion of each block or project. Projects are assessed by the assignment of marks to various project deliverables. The percentages assigned to deliverables may vary between projects.

Repeat Assessments

Repeat assessment will be dependent on failed components.  This will be confirmed at formal exam boards.

Indicative Syllabus

Modelling in SketchUp:

Build, edit and manipulate 3D form and compose interior spaces, with materials, textures, furniture, and fittings.

  • SketchUp tools: Draw, offset, presspull, move, copy, paste, scale, rotate, measure, paint bucket, components, explode;
  • Creation of components, with the application of materials, utilising architectural styles.
  • Production of a 3D model to generate and export scene images/graphics (elevations & perspectives)

Digital / graphic manipulation in Adobe Photoshop:

Recompose basic sketches / diagrams as creative digital expressions of design concepts or 3D interior spatial views inhabited with colour, texture, form, fittings, furniture, light, materiality and people.

  • Photoshop tools: Move, marque tool, polygonal lasso tool, magic wand tool, crop, eraser (blend), shapes, pan, line;
  • Colour management: Paint Bucket, gradient, opacity and fill;
  • Free transform, editing using Mask, Smart objects and filters.
  • The components and terms related to working with typeface, style and fonts;
  • Conversion of hand sketches/diagrams/scale models and real-world images into digital graphic compositions; Inhabiting spaces with people, materials, furniture.
  • Create, edit and manipulate ‘text’ and ‘type’ and images using image editing and formatting software.
  • Create a variety of digital image formats (DPI, PPI, PDF, CMYK and RGB) with different types of Resolution.
