DSGN06138 2019 Professional Practice 1 (Core Communication Skills)
Professional Practice 1 introduces students to the theory and practice of communication by developing confidence and skills in interpersonal, oral and written communication with particular focus on Creative Design practices. One the key objectives of this module is to generate confidence, self-esteem and to encourage personal development through effective written and verbal communication skills.
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;
Demonstrate an understanding of the research, structure and organisation needed in a variety of presentation techniques and modes.
Research user groups, user needs and behaviours and present research orally, visually and in written format
Develop verbal and non verbal inter-personal skills to enhance professional development
Develop effective interpersonal strategies that support personal development, self awareness and confidence through communication skills.
Write a cover letter, CV and communicate effectively with professional bodies
Teaching and Learning Strategies
Lecture, Seminar and Workshop-based. Seminars allow for in depth debate, workshops enable interaction and group involvement
Module Assessment Strategies
Learners are assessed through 100% continuous assessment. This includes group presentations, individual presentations, written submissions, research reports, and personal development projects

Effective CV and Cover Letter writing that communicates with clarity and conviction
Introduction to the principles of practical report writing and persuasive writing
Design Report writing informed by studio projects
Application of research to build credible and substantiated arguments.
Introduction to effective listening and communication
Understanding group dynamics and collaboration as an effective tool in communication: interactive and team work strategies
Organisation techniques and participation in work groups: manage research, allocate tasks and structure roles
Core Presentation Skills and techniques: structure, plan and present effective presentations
Introduction to Personal Development: self -awareness and confidence building
Application of assertive techniques in communicating with others
Understanding nonverbal behaviours as communication tools that effect feelings, attitudes, affiliations, status and power
Appraisal and evaluation of peer presentations, recognising importance of listening and constructive feedback
