Description

This module introduces students to the major principles of professionalism and examines the role and importance of effective communication in the design process. This module will develop the student’s knowledge and build on the skills developed in the design fundamentals module including: effective design communication and representation; reflective and reflexive practice ‑ judgment making and critical thinking; the mechanics of design ‑ the design process in practice; time management; and how to work as part of a team.

The module aims to:

  • Develop interpersonal skills to enable effective communication and team working;
  • Develop a range of design communication and representation skills using appropriate media including personal skills involving discussion, negotiation, and team‑working;
  • Develop students' ability to think critically by means of a reflective practice journal;
  • Extend the student’s knowledge and skill base associated with working in groups in design contexts.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Deliver effective visual, verbal and written presentations utilising appropriate language, terminology and representational graphics.

2.

Compose design presentations that successfully demonstrate drawing conventions and cross‑referencing of design information.

3.

Discuss and demonstrate the application of architectural precedents and design theories at an intermediate level.

4.

Reflect on the interpersonal skills needed for effective communication and team working.

5.

Consider the professional environments of the creative industries in local, national and global contexts.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Professional Communication 1 is is taught using a combination of lectures, presentations, theoretical discussion and practical based tutorials. Both individual and group work modes are utilised throughout.

Module Assessment Strategies

Formative assessment deliverables address the module learning outcomes. The assessment strategy focuses on the student's introduction to the subject Professional Communication 1 through:

  • Research and visual methodologies
  • Information literacy skills
  • Multimodal communication methodologies including:
    • Analogue and Digital Communication;
    • Gestural modes;
    • Written composition;
    • Oral presentation.

Repeat Assessments

Repeat assessment will be dependent on failed components.  This will be confirmed at formal exam boards.

Design Methodology:

  • Theories of learning, learning styles and reflective practice;
  • Design thinking and communication;
  • Design evaluation ‑ measurement criteria and judgment in design;
  • Concepts associated with group work and team building in design contexts;
  • Seminal study of designers in the industry.

Communication Skills:

  • Modes of Presentation;
  • Presentation skills (how to orchestrate a presentation event);
  • Graphic presentation composition;
  • Reflective and Reflexive Practice;
  • Learning log / Journaling;

Time Management (Planning & Record keeping).
