DSGN06125 2019 Interior Architecture Studio II: Material Identity
This studio-based module focuses on the design process and communication skills used within Interior Architecture. The studio projects are underpinned by the notion of 'Material Identity” and its creative manipulation using the interplay of light, materials, colour, texture, scale, spatial qualities and human ergonomics. The module engages the students in design at multiple scales, including life-size explorations. Students move between the design of bespoke furnishings and lighting and the whole interior fit-out in design projects such as record label headquarters or retail outlets.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;
Conduct visual analyses relating to form, scale, material, light and colour in the research and conception of simple designs of furnishings and spaces.
Critically manipulate form, scale, material, light, colour and sensory qualities in the generation of simple designs of furnishings and spaces.
Communicate design ideas relating to material identity and atmosphere using concept models; development models; mood boards and materials boards.
Work independently in self-directed manner in limited contexts as substantiated in a portfolio of design development work.
Synthesize research relating to physical, contextual, social, cultural and aesthetic meaning in the conception and generation of simple designs of furniture and interiors.
Clearly express and visualize design ideas using verbal, graphic and written means.
Identify client/user needs and characteristics, interpreting their visual and material identity.
Teaching and Learning Strategies
The module is delivered using a combination of lectures, group tutorials, individual tutorials and design reviews. Through discussion, critical evaluation and design exploration, the student (or student group) develop(s) their design. An experiential and student‑centred approach promotes reflective and active engagement with learning, fostering confidence and competence in the communication of ideas. Clearly defined learning outcomes are constructively aligned with assessment criteria.
Module Assessment Strategies
Design projects are broken down into a series of tasks that are assessed formatively (with verbal or written feedback to students) through group and individual presentations/reviews at the end of each task; and graded summatively the end of each project or semester through portfolio submission and/or formal review.
Repeat Assessments
Repeat assessment will be dependent on failed components. This will be confirmed at formal exam boards.
Indicative Syllabus
The design process is applied through students’ design projects. Supporting lectures, demonstrations and case studies provide guidance. The design project(s) integrate the following elements:
- Research and analysis (User/client identity and needs; design precedent analysis);
- Development of material identity (ideas, concepts and explorations);
- Physical prototyping and mock-ups at a range of scales (including 1:1);
- Experimental manipulation of light, materials, colour, texture, scale, spatial qualities and human interaction;
- Spatial planning and manipulation of space, person and object space in three dimensions.
Skills developed during the previous semester in Design Fundamentals and Digital Media for Design III are utilised in the students design projects. These include freehand sketching, perspective sketching, orthographic projection; models, verbal presentations; photography; digital image manipulation; design drawings, conceptual, working and finished models, mood boards, materials boards, verbal presentations; drawings and images.
