DIGT08008 2021 Digital Transformation
This module introduces the learner to the concept of Digital Transformation. It will identify the nuances of digital innovation, disruptive growth and transformational change for traditional organisations and how borne digital organisations such as Facebook, Amazon, and Google are harnessing the potential of the innovative SMAC IoT (social mobile, analytics, cloud and the Internet of things) technologies to improve organisational effectiveness and efficiencies. This module explores the key factors necessary for a successful digital transformation, including the importance of Top Management Support, a shared vision of the digital transformation, a digital transformation strategy, an agile workforce and the importance of a robust operational backbone which will support a digital service platform. This module will examine how these factors will positively influence the outcome of a digital transformation.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;
Critically examine emerging technologies and evaluate their contribution to society and the organisation of the future.
Identify and discuss the key challenges encountered by organisations when implementing a digital transformation including, unity of effort, organisational politics, and lack of appropriate skills.
Develop and demonstrate an understanding of the evolution of Information Communication Technology (ICT) and how this technology has evolved into the complex IT Architecture and Infrastructure in organisations today.
Explore the role of top management and how top management can support the organisation as it moves towards implementation of the digital transformation.
Teaching and Learning Strategies
Effective teaching and learning strategies will evolve when module commences. However, it is expected that small group work, problem-based learning, peer support will occur as part of this module. Creative tools will also be used to assist students with their understanding of key theoretical concepts and ideas.
*Live online learning will occur weekly. Once per term students will attend classroom-based learning. The onsite teaching and learning plan will be developed in consultation with students. It may vary year by year.
A variety of teaching and learning techniques will be incorporated including case studies, problem-based learning, flipped classroom. lecture and seminar.
Module Assessment Strategies
Assessment One (20%)
To support active student engagement with learning 20% will be awarded for participation in VLE Subject Blog on the adoption of SMAC IT technologies and their role in digital transformation. How top management support the use of these technologies, and how these technologies can be utilised in-house to maximise market share and increase productivity. Students are expected to contribute to this week
Assessment Two (80%)
The student will be expected to complete a written assignment (3,000) words which is designed to assess their understanding of the role of digital technology in organisations and society as well as provide a critical analysis of contemporary issues facing top management as they move through to implementing a digital transformation. . This student will be expected to provide a critical interpretation of the concepts learned as well as reflect on their application in practice, outlining possible organisational/societal initiatives that could be applied in a 'real world' setting.
Repeat Assessments
Repeat requirements will be decided based on failed components and recorded at the Progression and Award Boards.
Indicative Syllabus
1. Critically examine emerging technologies and evaluate their contribution to society and the organisation of the future.
The student will explore the purpose and role of innovative digital technologies in society and the organisations, in the context of the current landscape. Emerging technologies including social, mobile analytics and cloud technologies and the Internet of things will be examined, as will the idea of digital ethics which will inform this discussion and debate. Students will critically reflect on the potential of these digital technologies to organisations of the future. Students are expected to work together to problem-solve and identify how these will be applied in practice reflecting on their potential as part of this learning experience
2. Identify and discuss the key challenges encountered by organisations when implementing a digital transformation including, unity of effort, organisational politics, and lack of appropriate skills.
Students will review key literature on digital transformation where information systems are seeking to transform the organisation. Students will develop a clear understanding of how digital transformation differs from ICT enabled change and examine the factors management should undertake to ensure successful implementation. The student will examine the challenges encountered by the organisation as they digitally transform and determine how organisations can address these challenges as they move towards implementation.
3. Develop and demonstrate an understanding of the evolution of Information Communication Technology (ICT) and how this technology has evolved into the complex IT Architecture and Infrastructure in organisations.
Students will undertake a review of corporate ICT. They will examine their evolution from the earlier adoption of ICT in Manufacturing to current Enterprise Resource Planning (ERPII) technology. Students will examine how the evolution of ICT has become incorporated into every aspect of global business and how these technologies are utilised in organisations today
4.Explore the role of top management and how top management can support the organisation as it moves towards the implementation of a digital transformation.
Students will review key literature on digital transformation where information systems are seeking to transform the organisation. Students will develop a clear understanding of how digital transformation differs from ICT enabled change and examine the factors management should undertake to ensure successful implementation.
