Description

This module will enable learners to recognise and explain Mechanical and Electrical services technology and building systems. It will enable learners to identify the requisite Mechanical and Electrical services elements, systems and components which combine to complete a variety of efficient functioning building types. This will require learners to illustrate and recognise the relationship between the CSA (Civil, Structural and Architectural) disciplines and the Mechanical and Electrical services. This module will also develop an appreciation for the relevant Building Regulations, Codes of practise and relevant professional bodies publications and guidance. The learner will be required to have a clear understanding of Low Energy and sustainable Building services technology and applications. The learner will develop the necessary skill sets to formulate the range of options best suited to the building's use in accordance with the clients requirements and critique the commercial implications involved in the design development.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Analyse and examine electrical Services Technology as appropriate to a variety of efficient functioning building types .

2.

Compare and apply the correct methods of locating and upgrading existing electrical services and installation

3.

Analyse and examine mechanical Services Technology as appropriate to a variety of efficient functioning building types.

4.

Compare and apply the correct methods of locating and upgrading existing mechanical services and installation.

5.

Differentiate and explore what areas of work would be associated with Mechanical and electrical services builder’s work.

6.

Support and examine the options available to apply renewable technology to new and existing buildings.

7.

Examine and discuss the challenges faced by M&E design consultants

8.

Appraise and select the best ways to formulate and compile client’s briefs and manage expectations of the end user.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

This module will be delivered through lectures. Moodle is used by lecturers to direct and manage the learning process and facilitates formal learning, posting of lecture notes and continuous assessments, additional resources and supporting documents. Informal learning: social communication between learners. Moodle will also be further used as a means of assessment, utilising online quizzes, for the uploading of assignments of reports

Module Assessment Strategies

Types of assessment:

Examination

Multi-Choice Questions

Assignments

Repeat Assessments

Students who fail an element of the module will need to repeat each element (exam and or final exam) as instructed by the module lecturer

Indicative Syllabus

1. Analyse and examine electrical Services Technology as appropriate to a variety of efficient functioning building types

To enable the effective and efficient management of facilities, including Utility supplies, site services, general electrical, Lighting & emergency lighting, Lifesaving systems, mechanical wiring, and controls. The relevant topics will be covered to enable the learner to Analyse and examine electrical services are as follows: Elements of building services, Utility and site services, Distribution and containment, Builder’s work, Electrical Services, Earthing, bonding & LPS, Lighting inc. Emergency and Lifesaving systems.

2. Compare and apply the correct methods of locating and upgrading existing electrical services and installation

To ensure systems are compliant to regulatory and statutory standard. Being able to provide upgrade solutions. The relevant topics will be covered to enable the learner to Compare and apply the correct methods of locating and upgrading existing electrical services are as follows: Elements of building services, Utility and site services, Distribution and containment, Builder’s work, Electrical Services, Earthing, bonding & LPS, Lighting inc. Emergency and Lifesaving systems.

3. Analyse and examine mechanical Services Technology as appropriate to a variety of efficient functioning building types.

To enable the effective and efficient management of facilities, including Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning, Heating Systems, boiler options, heat loss, passive, and natural ventilation, drainage systems, grey water systems harvesting. The relevant topics will be covered to enable the learner to Analyse and examine Mechanical services are as follows: Elements of building services, Utility and site services, Distribution and containment, Builder’s work, Heating systems, HVAC System, Ventilation systems, Renewable technology, Water supply systems, Drainage & Wastes.

4. Compare and apply the correct methods of locating and upgrading existing mechanical services and installation.

To ensure systems are compliant to regulatory and statutory standard. Being able to provide upgrade solutions. The relevant topics will be covered to enable the learner to Compare and apply the correct methods of locating and upgrading existing mechanical services are as follows: Elements of building services, Heating systems, HVAC System, Ventilation systems, Renewable technology, Water supply systems, Drainage & Wastes

5. Differentiate and explore what areas of work would be associated with Mechanical and electrical services builder’s work.

Be able to predict the extent, scale, type required for the installations. Ensuring recommendations are in compliance with the regulations. The relevant topics will be covered to enable the learner to differentiate and explore what areas of work would be associated with Mechanical and electrical services builder’s work are as follows: Elements of building services, Role of Building services engineers, Client briefs, Distribution and containment, Builder’s work - Recessing / Notching.

6. Support and examine the options available to apply renewable technology to new and existing buildings.

Explore how these can be retrofitted to existing buildings and incorporated in the installation design. The relevant topics will be covered to enable the learner to Support and examine the options available to apply renewable technology to new and existing buildings are as follows: Elements of building services, Heating systems, HVAC System, Ventilation systems, Renewable technology.

7.  Examine and discuss the challenges faced by M&E design consultants

How to best integrate with the project design team to achieve a mutual agreed outcome and or project completion. The relevant topics will be covered to enable the learner to Examine and discuss the challenges faced by M&E design consultants are as follows: Role of Building services engineers, Integration of building services to the overall building design.

8.  Appraise and select the best ways to formulate and compile client’s briefs and manage expectations of the end user.

Discuss how best to formulate an accurate brief and project scope during the initiation and planning phase, also how best to manage the end user expectations. The relevant topics will be covered to enable the learner to Appraise and select the best ways to formulate and compile client’s briefs and manage expectations of the end user are as follows: Role of Building services engineers, establishing scope and specification, Formulating Client briefs.
