It will provide learners with some understanding of building services technology within the built environment.
This module aims to further develop and deepen the learner’s understanding of the building services elements and components which combine to complete an efficient and functioning building.
This includes an understanding of the relationship between the architectural and civil engineering disciplines and the building services discipline.
It will provide the learner with an awareness of the range of options best suited to the building’s use and for end-user comfort.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;
Apply and use their developed knowledge to discuss the importance of green technologies to building services.
Assess and explain the functions, principles and environmental constraints of services in buildings.
Demonstrate the application of the building regulations, relevant to building services, for a construction project.
Explain the theory of the application of services to a building.
Identify the importance and practical application of science to building services.
Teaching and Learning Strategies
This module will be delivered using blended learning techniques.
This will include online lectures (via adobe connect or similar), workshops and work based learning where relevant along with guest lectures and augmented by independent learning and directed learning.
This approach is expected to address student learning needs.
Moodle will be used to upload educational material (i.e. presentations and recordings of online lectures plus supplementary reading material and additional resources).
Moodle will also be further used as a means of assessment, utilising online quizzes, for the uploading of assignments and reports.
This multi-faceted, blended approach of; lectures, workshops and online resources fosters collaborative student learning.
Module Assessment Strategies
Module will be assessed using a combination of end of semester final exam (60%), continuous assessment and course work (40%).
The continuous assessment and course work will involve one online quiz at mid-term and one assignment where students will be required to;
Provide a Building Survey report which demonstrates the student's ability to carry out a survey and critically evaluate and make recommendations on the buildings services.
Repeat Assessments
Repeat Continuous Assessment and/or Final Exam.
