Description

This module is intended to develop design, communication and management skills within a BIM environment.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Understand fundamentals of BIM and its implementation in the construction industry

2.

Create and present basic 3D BIM Models, details and schedules

3.

Manage and share content of 3D models competently in a CDE environment

4.

Access and use Building Information Modelling within the construction industry

Teaching and Learning Strategies

This module will be delivered using blended learning techniques which will comprise mainly of  front-loaded online resources such as recorded tutorials, augmented by independent learning and directed learning. This approach is expected to address student-learning needs. A learning platform such as Moodle will be used to upload educational material (i.e. tutorial  recordings plus supplementary reading material) and as a means of assessment (e.g. uploading
assignments and projects). This blended approach (lectures and pre-recorded tutorials) allows students work at their own pace.

Module Assessment Strategies

Mid term summative and formative assessment 10%. Major summative project of a Revit model 50%. Summative Final exam 40%. Both project and final exam are compulsory pass.

Repeat Assessments

Repeat project and final exam.

Required & Recommended Book List

Required Reading
2011-04-19 BIM Handbook John Wiley & Sons
ISBN 9780470541371 ISBN-13 0470541377

"The BIM Handbook presents the technology and processes behind BIM and how architects, engineers, contractors and sub-contractors, construction and facility owners (AECO) can take advantage of the new technology and work process. Unlike CAD, BIM is a major paradigm shift in the documentation, work processes and exchange of project information. It facilitates collaboration and further automation, in both design and construction. AEC professionals need a handbook to guide them through the various BIM technologies and related processes. The collaborative nature of BIM requires professionals to view BIM from various industry perspectives and understand how BIM supports multiple project participants. The BIM Handbook reviews BIM processes and tools from multiple perspectives: the owner, architects and engineers, contractors, subcontractors and fabricators"--
