CONS06045 2019 Applied Construction Technology with Advanced Manufacturing 1
This workshop‑based module develops on the skills acquired during the students first year of study to an advanced standard in construction related applications of carpentry, joinery and appropriate manufacturing technologies. The student is introduced to additional machinery and techniques in the completion of their continuous assessment projects linked to their theory and technology studies.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;
Demonstrate an understanding of health and safety requirements within the workshop environment
Demonstrate a clear understanding of the sequential design and fabrication process
Prepare detailed and accurate working drawings for manufacture of workshop projects
Appraise specific requirements to enable the design and construction of appropriate supporting formwork and jigs in the creation of non-standard and curved projects
Apply mathematical principles and calculations in the design and manufacturing of scaled and full-size projects
Demonstrate an ability to Safely, efficiently, and appropriately use a wide variety conventional woodworking machines; as well as accurately set-up and operate CNC woodworking machines.
Explain the advantages and disadvantages and role of CAD or CAM software as applied to CNC routing
Construct the geometry of parts using CAD/CAM packages, decide upon a machining strategy, post-process and machine using the code generated.
Produce graphic simulation to display machining operation and set up, when machining the programmed parts.
Teaching and Learning Strategies
This module is delivered using a combination of online resources and workshop-based instruction and project fabrication. Moodle will be used to provide educational and instructional material, class notes and project drawings, with links provided to upload supplementary reports on completed projects. In-class demonstrations of new material, machinery and techniques, supervision of project design stage and one-to-one support during project development are considered the core elements of the learning strategy employed. Individual and group projects are undertaken and facilitate direct instruction, self-directed learning and collaborative student engagement. In addition to guest lectures, this multi-faceted approach is expected to address student learning needs.

Introduction to the workshop environment, health and safety, tools and equipment, sharpening and tool maintenance
Self-directed research, design and manufacture of curved timber components project
Application of trigonometric and structural principles in simple and complex roof construction projects
Modern woodworking techniques
Jig-making and wood machining
Various jointing methods appropriate to the manufacture of joinery and furniture projects
Machine Safety, Work-holding, Safely, efficiently and appropriately set-up and operate CNC woodworking machine.
Programme Management -External referencing of programmes, Post Processing to produce CNC routing programmes, Importing files from other applications, Importation of machining code files.
2D Programming using CAD/CAM package - Construct the geometry of parts using CAD/CAM packages. Produce graphic simulation to display machining operation and set up when machining programmed parts.
Manufacturer of Parts within stated Geometric and Dimensional Tolerances - Create and run programmes to manufacturer parts. Edit tool compensation, decide upon a machining strategy, post-process and machine using the code generated.
