Description

This practical module focuses on technical skills that learners apply to their own design projects. During practical studio and workshop assignments, students practice design skills relating to design for climate; they analyse and draw re-furbished buildings and they creatively detail their own  interior design project (in drawing and model). Site visits; physical prototyping with real materials; live case study analysis; modelling and drawing characterise this enjoyable and accessible module, which brings the craft of interior refurbishment to life.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Draw scaled construction drawings of a simple refurbished building indicating appropriate measures to control moisture and heat loss.

2.

Rationalise the principles of designing for  climate , human health and comfort as applied to a design project.

3.

Conduct a basic environmental site analysis.

4.

Use drawings, samples and writing to communicate the properties and application of interior materials and finishes to a design project.

5.

Utilise annotated three dimensional drawings or models to explain the construction of a simple refurbished building.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

This module is taught using a combination of lectures, presentation, theoretical discussion and practical based tutorials, workshops, projects, fieldwork and visits.  Both individual and group work modes are utilised throughout.

Module Assessment Strategies

Formative and summative assessment modes using a range of techniques which includes group and/or individual work mainly: essays, projects and presentations.

Repeat Assessments

Repeat assessment will be dependent on failed components.  This will be confirmed at formal exam boards.

Indicative Syllabus

Indicative syllabus

This practical module develops students' ability to draw, make and understand buildings and interiors.

The module typically includes the following:

  • Sustainable and passive design principles in action:

    • Climate and site analysis;

    • Applied analysis and refinement of a design in relation to heat, light, sound and comfort;

    • sustainable material selection.

  • Building analysis and introduction to refurbishment:

    • site visit and condition survey of simple building (relevant to a design project);

    • case study analysis of live/graphic examples of construction with drawings and models.

  • Material selection and detailing:

    • choice of materials and research into design precedents for detailing;

    • guided  detailing exercises to developing technical skills and understanding of construction drawings.

ISBN 1780674775 ISBN-13 9781780674773

Construction and detailing are vital skills for all students studying interior design and architecture. This book is structured to encourage a diversity of techniques, allowing each student the means to find and put into practice the appropriate solution to fabrication issues and also to express their own personal aesthetic. The relation of existing building shells to the construction and detailing of new elements is also explored. Practical tips are given throughout the book, the roles of consultants, manufacturers, suppliers, and fabricators are explained, and theories of modern, sustainable approaches to interior detailing are discussed. The chapters are packed with professional, annotated drawings and explanatory photographs of techniques, materials, and tools. Through these, the principles of sound construction are explained. This second edition includes revised diagrams to increase clarity, more on sustainability, and more on services and lighting.

2018-09-30 Modern Construction Handbook Birkhauser
ISBN 3035616914 ISBN-13 9783035616910

Owing to regular revision, the Modern Construction Handbook has become a classic in advanced building construction literature, not least because of its clear structure covering the chapters "Material", "Wall", "Roof", "Structure", "Environment", and "Applications". For the fifth edition, a large part of the 3D presentations has been redrawn, all six chapters have been revised and updated. New standards have been established for this handbook, which is a basic resource for many architectural study courses, by adding more component details, new examples with a focus on sustainability and energy consumption, and a major update on finite element analysis (FEA) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD).
