Description

This module introduces students to the construction elements of small domestic buildings including internal/external walling, upper floors/stairs, roofs, completions and finishes. It gives students the skills and vocabulary necessary to apply the knowledge to describe and quantify a small domestic building. 

 

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Appreciate the application of the building regulations with regards to external and internal walls of a small domestic two storey building.

2.

Demonstrate a knowledge of upper floor and stair construction of a small domestic two storey dwelling.

3.

Explain typical domestic construction details of a pitched roof structure including finishes and rainwater goods.

4.

Identify different types of floor wall and ceiling finishes used in a small domestic building.

5.

Outline the typical types of internal and external completions (doors/windows/screens) in a small domestic building. 

Teaching and Learning Strategies

This module will be delivered through classroom lectures.

Moodle will be used to direct and manage the learning process with the post of lecture notes, discussion forums, Additional resources such as support documentation and links to other on-line resources.

Moodle will also be further used as a means of assessment, utilising online quizzes, for the uploading of assignments and reports.

This module is 40% Continuous Assessment and 60% Final exam

Indicative Syllabus

  1. External walls - Including relevant building regulations, cavity walls, forming cavities, wall ties. insulation, external brick/block (including ornamental brick), DPC's, cavity trays, openings in walls, cills, lintels, cavity closers, cold bridging details, air tightness, fire prevention, 
  2. Internal walls - Including relevant building regulations, Internal block walls, lightweight block walls, timber stud partitions, angled and curved walls, DPC's, openings with internal walls, cold bridging details, air tightness, fire prevention, 
  3. Upper floors - Including relevant building regulations, floor joists, floor trimmers, herringbone strutting, solid bridging, floor decking, precast upper floors, cold bridging details, air tightness, fire prevention, 
  4. Pitched roof (basic roof systems);  Including relevant building regulations, wall plates, rafters, collar ties, hangers, ridge boards, facias, soffits, struts, runners, insulation, breathable roof membrane, roof coverings, rain water disposal, cold bridging details, air tightness, fire prevention, 
  5. Floor, Wall and Ceiling Finishes - internal and external render finishes, screeds, levelling compounds, tanking, surface treatments, timber floors, tile, slab and mosaic finishes, flexible sheet finishes, plasterboard types and finishes.
  6. Wall completions including internal doors, door frames and linings, windows, and ironmongery.
  7. Domestic Timber Stairs - threads, risers, balustrading, handrails, newel posts.
