Description

The module provides a detailed exploration into Construction Technology. It also provides an introduction to maintenance by examining the main trends currently emerging in the area.

The aim of the module is to provide the student with a comprehensive understanding and appreciation of the need for the technologies and techniques required for upgrading and maintaining a range of buildings and their service, over their whole life.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Assess the technologies and techniques required for upgrading and maintaining a range of buildings and their services

2.

Demonstrate a knowledge of and explain the regulatory requirements and best practices relating to a property's life-cycle

3.

Demonstrate an appreciation and understanding of the need for building modernisation

4.

Identify and define the concepts of intelligent buildings (IBs) and the opportunities offered by the application of Building Energy Management Systems (BEMS)

5.

Identify, then compare and contrast the functional requirements, installation methods and selection of Building Services

6.

Recognise and demonstrate an appreciation of the need for systems and materials to reduce the environmental impact of construction work

7.

Assess and provide and provide advice on the; refurbishment, upgrading and retrofitting of buildings

8.

Undertake a building survey, form a comprehensive report, making recommendations relating to defects and potential improvements, state observations about and make recommendations in relation to TGD’s

Teaching and Learning Strategies

This module will be delivered using blended learning techniques.

This will include online lectures (via adobe connect or similar), workshops and work based learning where relevant along with guest lectures and augmented by independent learning and directed learning.

This approach is expected to address student learning needs.

Moodle will be used to upload educational material (i.e. presentations and recordings of online lectures plus supplementary reading material and additional resources).

Moodle will also be further used as a means of assessment, utilising online quizzes, for the uploading of assignments and reports.

This multi-faceted, blended approach of; lectures, workshops and online resources fosters collaborative student learning.

Module Assessment Strategies

Module will be assessed using a combination of end of semester final exam (60%), continuous assessment and course work (40%).

The continuous assessment and course work will involve one assignment where students will be required to;

  1. Undertake a building survey. Form a comprehensive report, making recommendations relating to defects and potential improvements, state observations about and make recommendations in relation to TGD’s and formulate a maintenance plan.

Repeat Assessments

Repeat Continuous Assessment and/or Final Exam.

Refurbishment and repair accounts for approximately 50 per cent of annual construction turnover. It is therefore essential that practitioners and those students who aspire to work in this sector are equipped with the best tools to do the job. A companion to 'Site Engineers Manual', this title fills this gap in construction literature.

ISBN 9781405183802 ISBN-13 9781405183802

This book offers a clear explanation of the principles and practice of construction planning, programming and control during the preparation and construction stages of a project. The book is written in the context of current procurement and contractual arrangements and JCT2005, NEC3 and ICE7 contracts are covered. The statutory framework within which construction projects must be managed is explained and the topic of construction hazard and risk is covered in detail. A variety of programming techniques are explained and the development of safe construction sequences and methods is particularly emphasised. The control of time, money and resources are considered in a risk management context and a complete chapter is devoted to cash flow.The third edition has been extensively updated and extended to include new materials on: * Hazard identification * Risk assessment * Health and safety management * CDM 2007 * Construction sequences and method statements * Delay analysis * Waste management and Site Waste Management Plans The final three chapters are devoted to individual case studies which have been selected to illustrate the practical application of the principles explained in the book and to provide examples of current procedures adopted by major contractors. The content is designed to provide a clear and comprehensive text for undergraduates on construction management, surveying and civil engineering degree courses.

Robin Barry's Construction of Buildings was first published in 1958 in 5 volumes, rapidly becoming a standard text on construction. In its current 2 volume format Barry remains hugely popular with both students and lecturers of construction and related disciplines. The third edition of Barry's Advanced Construction of Buildings expands and deepens your understanding of construction technology. It covers the construction of larger-scale buildings (primarily residential, commercial and industrial) constructed with load bearing frames, supported by chapters on fit-out and second fix, lifts and escalators, off-site construction and a new chapter on building obsolescence and revitalisation. Functional and performance requirements of the main building elements are emphasised throughout, as is building efficiency and meeting the challenges of limiting the environmental impact of buildings. You will find the text fully up to date with the latest building regulations and construction technologies. The new edition, with supporting material at www.wiley.com/go/barrysintroduction, is an ideal information source for developing a wider and deeper understanding of construction technology.
