Description

The module will provide the student with the networking skills, network service requirements and device configurations necessary in a small business. Students will explore cyber trends and threats with the aim to be safe online. Following on from there, the students will evaluate the measures used by organisations to mitigate the attacks. To deal with the growing needs of today's business, students will analyse the services provided by service providers in order to implement a secure IT infrastructure. Finally, students will investigate network compliance to formulate an IT compliance policy for a SME to prevent unethical activity, ensuring a fair workspace for all.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

Examine the networking requirements for a small to medium business.

2.

Design and implement a business network using wired and wireless technologies.

3.

Critique cybersecurity and data confidentiality in a business and recommend techniques to mitigate cyber attacks. 

4.

Critically assess cloud services for SMEs and determine how blockchain technology can be used in Cloud Storage. 

5.

Examine network compliance to prevent unethical activity ensuring a fair space for all to work 

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Lectures will introduce the student to the theoretical aspects of the course.

Lectures will be accompanied by readings that support and expand on what was covered in the lecture.

Practical exercises will be used to reinforce the learning experience.

 

Module Assessment Strategies

Learners will complete 2 components of continuous assessments which are designed to ensure they meet the module learning outcomes.

The assessments will allow students an opportunity to showcase their understanding of the material covered throughout the course.

Assessment will comprise of a range of applied projects and reports where students must critically review relevant literature, and demonstrate their knowledge of the course requirements.

L01 - Business Network 

  • Examine wired and wireless network components
  • Explore the movement of traffic through the network
  • Analyse the protocols that govern network communication.

 

L02 - The working network

  • Plan and instal a small business network using wired and wireless technology, then connect it to the Internet.
  • Perform basic configurations for routers, switches, wireless access points and end devices to provide access to local and remote network resources and to enable end-to-end connectivity between remote devices.
  • Configure and troubleshoot connectivity a small business network using security best practises.

 

L03 - Cybersecurity

  • Explore cybersecurity and its potential impact to a business.
  • Understand the most common threats, attacks, and vulnerabilities.
  • Gain insights into how businesses protect their operations from attacks.
  • Defend the network system, devices and business data from attacks.
  • Implement Disaster recovery.

 

L04 - Cloud Computing

  • Differentiate between Cloud Services models and how they can be used in business- Iaas, Paas, Saas
  • Examine existing deployment models for implementing cloud computing in an organisation
  • Determine how the cloud can benefit your business, as well as the challenges it may cause.
  • Sourcing and selecting the right cloud services for your business.
  • Evaluate the use of Blockchain Technology to secure Cloud storage.

 

L05 - Network Compliance

  • The need for network compliance in a business
  • Evaluate the Laws, Protocols, Security, Consensus, Permissions, Privacy
  • Determine who owns the data - Service policy
  • Examine compliance tools and how they can help minimise risks in the organisation
