Description

The student will be able to analyse, design, configure, verify and troubleshoot a secure enterprise network.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Configure, verify and troubleshoot routing protocols

2.

Configure, verify and troubleshoot a Layer 2 Switched Network.

3.

Connect to the outside world using IP Addressing services.

4.

Secure a network by filtering out unnecessary traffic.

5.

Manage Network Infrastructure

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Lectures will be used to to present the material and pace the learning process throughout the module.

Practical exercises will be used to re-enforce the learning experience.

Learners will be encouraged to ask and answer questions via Moodle.

Module Assessment Strategies

There will be 2 pieces of continuous assessment work

  • Assessment 1 will examine routing protocols and switching concepts(25%)
  • Assessment 2 will examine network security, addressing services and network management(25%)

Final exam will assess the theoretical aspects of the course(50%)

Continuous assessment will use network simulation software.

Repeat Assessments

Repeat exam and/or practical to examine the learning outcomes that have not been achieved.

Indicative Syllabus

Configure, verify and troubleshoot routing protocols.

  • Static and Default routing
  • Dynamic Routing - RIP, OSPF, EIGRP

Configure, verify and troubleshoot a Layer 2 Switched Network.

  • VLANs
  • Virtual trunking protocol
  • Dynamic Trunking Protocol
  • Problems that occur when applying network redundancy and how to overcome the problems using STP
  • Communicating with users on various subnets using - inter-vlan routing
  • Maximise bandwidth usage with etherchannel
  • Use port security to secure the LAN environment

Connect to the outside world using appropriate IP Addressing services.

  • Obtaining an IP address from a DHCP server
  • Accessing the WAN using NAT and  PAT
  • Layer 3 redundancy using HSRP

Secure a network by filtering out unnecessarily traffic.

  • Standard ACLs, Extended ACLs, numbered and named ACLs
  • AAA authentication using a radius server

Manage the Network Infrastructure

  • Backup and restore IOS images and configurations
  • Recover from password failure
  • Monitoring devices using SNMP and SysLog
  • Troubleshoot netwrok problems
