COMP06269 2018 ICT and Transferable Skills
The module aims to provide students with fundamental skills for effective and professional communication (written and verbal) in the workplace. It also deals with the effective us of Information Technology in the implementation of these skills. It will cover the use of software packages for word processing, spreadsheet creation and the production of presentations. The students will be also be given an introduction to Computer Systems. The meaning of plagiarism and peer reviewed information will be explained to students. The importance of teamwork, leadership and conflict management will be discussed.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;
Identify the main component parts and peripheral devices of a standard computer system
Create documentation using Word processing software incorporating a range of data management and editing techniques including a business letter, email and a short technical report.
Compile and edit data sets using Spreadsheet software including the use of functions and formulae, chart construction and object linking.
Participate as part of a team to create and deliver a professional oral presentation using relevant software.
Explain the meaning of peer reviewed information, plagiarism and the Harvard Referencing System.
Teaching and Learning Strategies
This module will be delivered using blended learning techniques. This will include online lectures (via adobe connect or similar)and workshops augmented by independent learning and directed learning. This approach is expected to address student-learning needs. A learning platform such as Moodle will be used to upload educational material (i.e. presentations and recordings of online lectures plus supplementary reading material) and as a means of assessment (e.g. quizzes, uploading assignments and journals). This blended approach (lectures and workshops) brings students together to facilitate group learning.
Module Assessment Strategies
This module is 100% Continuous Assessment.
This module will be assessed by means of practical assignments which the student will carry out in the own time. This will include the production of a business letter and technical report using word processing software, production and delivey of a professional presentation in a team environment and a project involving the production of a spreadsheet to analyse and present data. There will also be a Moodle quiz on the theoretical content of the module. There will also be an end of module practical exam which the students will be able to do remotely.

- Insertion of Tables of Contents, Citations and Tables of References
- Introduction of MS Office Live
Presentation - Microsoft PowerPoint (Desktop and Online Version)
- Fundamental rules in creating a presentations using software
- Apply a design to a presentation
- Apply animation to a presentation
- Use the master slide to alter the design of a presentation
- Integrate images, diagrams and other media into a presentation
Spreadsheets - Microsoft Excel
- Input data into a spreadsheet
- Perform basic calculations using formulae
- Use the SUM, AVERAGE, MAX, MIN and COUNT functions to perform calculations
- Produce relevant charts to describe a data set (Column, Bar, Line and Pie Charts)
- Format data in a spreadsheet for printing as a report.
